Alex Nikolich hit a 2-run homer and Cam Cowden pitched a 4-hit shutout as Denison topped the Bishops in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday in Granville.

In the nightcap, Nikolich and Drew Shamrock drove in 3 runs apiece to spark the Big Red to a win.

Denison took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener when Lee Fischer singled with one out and Nikolich hit a 2-out homer.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the top of the fifth when senior third baseman Andy Busch (Westerville/South) lined a leadoff double. Two outs later, senior shortstop Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) singled Busch over to third, but the runners were stranded there.

Denison added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.

Cowden struck out 11 and walked none for Denison. Senior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) pitched a complete-game 3-hitter for the Bishops, striking out 5 and walking one.

In the nightcap, Brian Regan led off with a walk and scored on an error to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Denison made it 3-0 on Regan's 2-run single in the second.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 3-1 in the top of the third as junior outfielder Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and sophomore shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) lined consecutive singles. The runners moved up on Mott's fly ball to right and Strasburg scored on Busch's single. Sophomore outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) followed with a walk to load the bases, but all 3 runners were left on base.

Denison sealed the game with 3 runs in the third and 3 more runs in the fourth.

Senior righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops. He allowed 6 runs in 2-plus innings.

Adam Chonko was the starting and winning pitcher for Denison.
