Ohio Wesleyan 14, Denison 3
March
28, 2004
Sophomore
outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) drove in 3 runs and freshman
outfielder Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), freshman first baseman
Tom Bottichio (Mason) and senior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson)
drove in 2 runs apiece to power the Bishops past Denison in the nightcap
of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Sunday
in Granville.
In the opener, Denison pushed across 3 runs in the first inning and Drew
Shamrock pitched a 4-hit shutout to give the Big Red a win.
Denison loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning.
Brian Regan led off with a single, A.J. Jezierski reached on an error
by sophomore second baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) and, one
out later, a single by Lee Fischer. Shamrock followed with a single that
scored Regan, Alex Nikolich plated Jezierski with a sacrifice fly and
Brian Mulcahy followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the top of the fifth when senior third baseman
Andy Busch (Westerville/South) and Toney rapped 2-out singles, but the
runners were stranded at first and second.
Shamrock struck out 9 and walked none for Denison. Sophomore righthander
Michael Krieger (Boardman) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio
Wesleyan.
In the nightcap, Bottichio slammed an RBI double in the top of the first,
scoring senior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby), who had led off with a
walk, to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead. Denison answered with a run in the
bottom of the inning on singles by Regan, Adam Mandel and Fischer.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead for good with 5 runs in the third. With one
out, Williams reached on an error by Big Red shortstop Regan, then stole
second and continued to third on catcher Paul Fischer's throwing error.
Sherman stroked an RBI single to give the Bishops the lead, then senior
designated hitter Tyler Mott (Grove City) singled. Bottichio followed
with a grounder back to Denison pitcher Harry Shillingford, but Shillingford's
error on the play allowed Sherman to score, with Mott safe at second.
Toney doubled in one run and Schultheis doubled in 2 runs to cap the inning.
The Bishops added 2 runs in the fifth, one on Busch's solo homer and the
other coming when Schultheis doubled and scored on an error. Ohio Wesleyan
broke the game open with 5 runs in the sixth, with Sherman, Bottichio
and senior shortstop Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) driving
RBI singles and Toney collecting a 2-run double.
Sophomore righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) picked
up the win, striking out 2 and walking 2 and allowing 3 runs in 5.2 innings
of work. Shillingford was the starting and losing pitcher for Denison.
