Wabash
5, Ohio Wesleyan 3
Ohio Wesleyan 7, Wabash 0
April
3, 2004
Sophomore
righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) hurled a 6-hit shutout and sophomore
second baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) slammed a solo home run
as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wabash in the second game of a North Coast Athletic
Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.
In the opener, Chris Sides hit a 3-run homer to lift the Little Giants
to a win.
Williams staked the Bishops to a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the
bottom of the first inning of the nightcap.
That looked like it would be enough for Krieger, who scattered 6 hits
in the game. Wabash threatened in the fourth, when Nick George led off
with a double and Sides added a 2-out single, but the runners were stranded
at the corners. The Little Giants knocked on the door again in the sixth,
loading the bases with one out on a leadoff single, a hit batsman and
a walk, but Krieger bounced back to strike out Sides and Mike Mack to
end the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan gave Krieger some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth
as senior shortstop Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder), junior
outfielder Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and senior outfielder
Byron Lowe (Medford, Mass./Cambridge Ridge) each collected 2-run singles.
Krieger struck out 5 and walked one in picking up the win. Bill Goff was
the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash.
In the opener, the Little Giants took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on
Goff's RBI double.
Senior third baseman Andy Busch (Westerville/South) belted a 2-run homer
in the second to give the Bishops the lead, but Wabash tied the game at
2-2 in the fourth on Danny Schubert's bases-loaded bunt single.
Senior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) scored the go-ahead run for
the Bishops in the bottom of the inning. With Mott on first base after
being hit by a pitch, Lowe chopped a ball to shortstop Schubert. Schubert
tried to get the force on Mott at second base, but his throw sailed into
rightcenter field and Mott never stopped running and scored on the play.
Sides gave the Little Giants the lead with his 3-run homer in the fifth,
and Wabash threatened to open up a wider margin by loading the bases with
one out in the seventh, but Mott struck out Mack and got Justin VanderIest
to bounce out to end the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Strasburg led
off with a single and went to second on a bunt by senior outfielder Mike
Albert (Shelby). Williams was hit by a pitch to bring the winning run
to the plate in freshman designated hitter Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin
Scioto). Sherman ripped a shot down the third base line that Wabash third
baseman Mack came up with on a diving play and retired the lead runner
at third, then Wabash pitcher John Thiry struck out Mott to end the game.
Mott worked the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing 7 hits and striking
out 5 while walking 3. Thiry allowed 6 hits for Wabash, striking out 8
and walking none.
