Ohio Wesleyan 6, John Carroll 5
April
7, 2004
Senior
outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) scored the winning run in the bottom of
the 10th inning as Ohio Wesleyan nipped John Carroll in the nightcap of
a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Littick Field.
In the opener, John Carroll overcame a 1-0 deficit to take a 5-1 win.
Albert led off the 10th inning of the nightcap with a single through the
right side. One out later, Albert stole second and the Blue Streaks intentionally
walked senior designated hitter Tyler Mott (Grove City). After the second
out, Albert broke for third base and John Carroll catcher Michael Tedford's
throw to third was wild, with Albert scoring on the play.
The game started out as a pitching duel between sophomore lefthander Josh
Nice (Hinckley/Highland) and John Carroll's John Grdina. Nice allowed
only 2 hits through the first 5.0 innings, while Grdina made only 2 mistakes.
Mott staked the Bishops to a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom
of the fourth, but John Carroll got the run back in the top of the fifth.
Mike D'Andrea led off with a single to right and moved to second on Josh
Luster's sacrifice. After George Jeffrey walked, Dominick Duggan forced
Jeffrey at second with D'Andrea taking third. Rafael Garabis then grounded
to senior third baseman Andy Busch (Westerville/South), who bobbled the
ball momentarily and then threw wide of first base. Sophomore first baseman
Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) threw back to Busch to cut
down Duggan trying for third, but not before D'Andrea scored the tying
run.
Senior shortstop Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) led off the
bottom of the fifth with a solo shot off Grdina to give the Bishops a
2-1 lead.
John Carroll assembled a run in the top of the seventh to send the game
into extra innings. With one out, Warren Cittaboni was hit by a pitch
and Jeffery and Duggan followed with singles to tie the game.
The Blue Streaks took the lead with 3 runs in the eighth on consecutive
RBI doubles by Dan Dittrich, Dan Wysmier and D'Andrea.
Mott responded with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning, scoring
sophomore second baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) and freshman
outfielder Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), who had walked.
Sophomore righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) was the winning pitcher
in relief. Krieger worked the final 5.0 innings, allowing 6 hits and striking
out 5 while walking one. Richard Absey was charged with the loss for John
Carroll.
In the opener, the Bishops took a 1-0 lead when junior outfielder Matt
Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) singled down the leftfield line and advanced
to second when Blue Streak leftfielder Jay Fowler's return throw was wild.
Sherman followed with a single to center to score Strasburg.
John Carroll took the lead in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by
Dittrich and Tedford, then added 3 runs in the fifth as a bases-loaded
error by Williams scored 2 runs and Jeffery plated another run with a
fielder's choice.
Burchett pitched the complete game for the Bishops, allowing 6 hits and
2 earned runs while striking out 7 and walking 3.
Eddie Borkowski scattered 6 hits in going the distance for John Carroll.
