Ohio
Wesleyan 4, Earlham 2
Ohio Wesleyan 3, Earlham 2
April
17, 2004
Senior
designated hitter Tyler Mott (Grove City) drove in 2 runs in the first
game, senior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) drove in 2 runs in the nightcap
and senior righthander Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) was
the winning pitcher in both games as Ohio Wesleyan swept a North Coast
Athletic Conference West Division twinbill from Earlham on Saturday at
Littick Field.
Both games featured late-inning rallies by the Bishops.
In the opener, Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first when freshman
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) drew a one-out
walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by sophomore
outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland).
The Bishops hiked their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Sherman singled
with one out, moved to third when Quaker pitcher Dave Luptak threw wildly
on a pickoff attempt, and scored on Mott's single.
Earlham tied the game in the sixth. Steve Pearson doubled with one out,
then Luptak reached when Bishop third baseman Burchett did not field his
grounder cleanly. Kevin Carr followed with a single up the middle to score
Pearson, but Toney threw out Luptak trying to take third base, with Carr
moving to second on the throw. Alan Campbell then blooped a single to
right center, scoring Carr. Burchett then came on in relief and got Derreck
Parkevich to line out to end the inning.
Albert led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and sophomore shortstop
Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) followed with a sacrifice bunt, but
both runners were safe when Quaker first baseman Carr juggled the throw,
with Albert racing all the way to third on the play. After Williams stole
second, Sherman lofted a fly ball to center to score Albert, and after
Williams stole third, Mott lofted a fly ball to right to score Williams
with an insurance run.
Burchett picked up with win by working the final 1.1 innings. Sophomore
righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) was the starting pitcher for the
Bishops. He allowed 7 hits and 2 runs over the first 5.2 innings while
striking out 6 and walking none.
Luptak pitched the complete game for Earlham, allowing 7 hits.
In the nightcap, Albert's 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth lifted
the Bishops to the win. With Ohio Wesleyan trailing, 2-1, senior outfielder
Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) drew a one-out walk, then stole second
with 2 out. Burchett then struck out, but the ball scooted through the
legs of Quaker catcher Campbell, allowing Burchett to reach first and
Schultheis to take third. After Burchett stole second, Albert singled
to center to score both runners.
Earlham had taken a 1-0 lead in the second. Campbell led off with a single
and Parkevich was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After Joe Henry bunted
the runners over to second and third, Sy Young drew a walk and then Jeremy
Carpenter reached on a catcher's interference call, with Campbell scoring
on the play.
The Quakers added a run in the fifth. Carpenter led off with a single,
moved to second on Pearson's sacrifice and scored when Bishop second baseman
Sherman misplayed Luptak's grounder.
Ohio Wesleyan got that run back in the bottom of the inning, when Burchett
drew a one-out walk, moved to second on Albert's single, took third on
Williams' fly ball to center and scored on Mott's infield single.
Burchett
came on in the top of the sixth after Campbell was hit by a pitch to lead
off the inning and coaxed Parkevich into a double play grounder, then
fanned Justin Colanese to get out of the inning. Burchett pitched 2.0
innings of hitless relief, striking out 2, to pick up the win. He is the
first Ohio Wesleyan pitcher to win both games of a doubleheader since
Mott turned the trick last April against Wittenberg. The 2 relief appearances
also make Burchett Ohio Wesleyan's all-time leader in that category with
50, passing the mark set by Peter Balyeat.
Sophomore righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) was
the starting pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. He allowed only 2 hits and no
earned runs over the first 5.0 innings.
Parkevich was charged with the loss in relief for Earlham.
