Senior
lefthander Mike Grady (North Canton/Hoover) and senior righthander Shaun
Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) fired shutouts as Ohio Wesleyan swept
a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division twinbill from Earlham
on Sunday at Littick Field.
The opener featured a pitchers' duel between Grady and Earlham's Sy Young.
Grady held the Quakers hitless until Rob Kinne bounced a one-out single
up the middle in the fifth. Young, meanwhile, did not allow a hit until
the fourth, when freshman second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin
Scioto) singled to right with one out.
Earlham threatened to take the lead in the sixth when, with one out, Kevin
Carr singled to shortstop and Alan Campbell followed with a single to
right center, sending Carr to third. Derreck Parkevich grounded to third,
with Campbell taking second on the play, but Grady stranded both runners
by getting Justin Colanese on a fly ball.
Ohio Wesleyan won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore outfielder
Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) led off with a single and moved to second
on a sacrifice by senior catcher Andy Busch (Westerville/South). Senior
first baseman Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) grounded to short,
with Toney advancing to third on the play. Freshman third baseman Tom
Bottichio then drove a single through the right side to score Toney and
end the game.
Grady finished with a 3-hit shutout. He struck out 2 and walked 2.
Young allowed 5 hits and struck out 3 and was charged with the loss.
In the nightcap, the Bishops turned to Burchett, who had picked up wins
in relief in both games of Saturday's doubleheader. Burchett was up to
the challenge and did not allow a Quaker runner to reach third base. He
allowed
2 hits in the third but stranded those runners at first and second, and
allowed an infield single in the sixth but stranded that runner at second.
The other hit Burchett allowed was in the second and that runner was wiped
out on a double play.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the third when senior designated hitter
Tyler Mott (Grove City) led off with a single and moved to second on a
sacrifice by senior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby). Mott advanced to
third on a fly ball by senior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) and
scored on Toney's infield single.
The Bishops hiked their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Sherman led off
with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Busch's double.
Ohio Wesleyan added 3 runs in the fifth. Albert led off with a walk and
Whitman was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Toney then dropped down
a bunt and the Quakers tried to retire Albert at third but all runners
were safe on the play. Sophomore shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman)
lofted a fly ball to right to score Albert, with Whitman moving to third
on the play. Toney then took off for second, and when the ball eluded
Quaker catcher Parkevich, Whitman scored. Sherman then drove a fly ball
to deep leftfield, with Toney tagging up and moving to third, and Bottichio
singled home Toney to cap the inning.
The Bishops tacked on a run in the sixth on consecutive doubles by Busch
and senior outfielder Byron Lowe (Medford, Mass./Cambridge Ridge).
Rob Kinne was the starting and losing pitcher for Earlham.
