Wesleyan 7, Wittenberg 3
Ohio Wesleyan 10, Wittenberg 4
April
24, 2004
Senior
catcher Andy Busch (Westerville/South) slammed a 3-run homer to highlight
a 5-run first inning that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a win in
the nightcap as the Bishops completed a sweep of a North Coast Athletic
Conference West Division doubleheader from Wittenberg on Saturday in Springfield.
In the opener, senior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) drove in 2 runs
to spark the Bishop offense.
Busch was hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning of the opener,
then moved to second on a single by freshman first baseman Tom Bottichio
(Mason). Senior catcher Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) bunted the
runners over to second and third and the Bishops took the lead on Albert's
RBI single to right.
Ohio Wesleyan broke the game open with 4 runs in the third. Senior third
baseman Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder), sophomore second baseman
Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) and senior designated hitter Tyler Mott
(Grove City) lined consecutive singles to open the inning, loading the
bases with nobody out. Freshman outfielder Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin
Scioto) plated a run with a sacrifice fly, then Busch singled home Williams
for a 3-0 Bishop lead. Bottichio walked to re-load the bases before Schultheis
was hit by a pitch to force home another run. Albert capped the inning
with an RBI ground out.
The Bishops made it 7-0 with 2 runs in the sixth. Senior second baseman
Brad Whitman (Canfield) led off with a double, Burchett walked and Williams
singled home Whitman. After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Mott
lofted a sacrifice fly to score Burchett.
Wittenberg rallied in the bottom of the sixth, touching sophomore righthander
Michael Krieger (Boardman) for 4 hits to assemble 3 runs, but Burchett
came on with 2 runners on and got Justin McCulla on a called third strike
to escape any further damage.
Krieger worked the first 5.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs. He struck
out 2 and walked one. Burchett pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing
a hit and striking out 2 while walking one to pick up his first save of
the season.
Ryan Goldschmidt was the starting and losing pitcher for Wittenberg.
In the nightcap, the Bishops erupted for 5 runs in the first inning. Williams
led off with an infield single, and one out later, Sherman reached on
an error by Wittenberg pitcher Tom Fox. Busch followed with a 3-run blast
to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard. Bottichio and Albert followed
with walks and Whitman and Williams capped the inning with RBI singles.
Wittenberg got a run back in the bottom of the inning on Matt Foster's
solo homer, but the Bishops got that run back in the second on Busch's
double and Bottichio's single.
Ohio Wesleyan added 3 runs in the third, with Mott and Sherman driving
in runs and another scoring on an error by Tiger second baseman Jon Komperda.
Wittenberg got those 3 runs back in the bottom of the inning, assembling
3 hits and taking advantage of 2 Bishop errors.
Whitman drove in a run in the fourth to wrap up the day's scoring.
Sophomore righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) went
the distance for Ohio Wesleyan, raising his record to 7-0 on the season.
Dunn scattered 6 hits and allowed 2 earned runs while striking out 2 and
walking one.
Fox was the starting and losing pitcher for Wittenberg.
