Ohio Wesleyan 4, Otterbein 3

Senior second baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Bishops over Otterbein in non-conference action on Wednesday at Littick Field.

With the score tied, 3-3, Whitman led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. Senior third baseman Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Otterbein pitcher John Frank committed a throwing error on the play, allowing Whitman to score.

Ohio Wesleyan had erased a 3-0 deficit in the game. The Bishops pushed across 2 runs in the seventh on Whitman's 2-run single, scoring senior outfielder Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson), who had reached on an error, and freshman first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason), who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Bishops tied the game in the eighth on a leadoff double as senior outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) led off with a double, stole third and scored on Schultheis' RBI single.

Otterbein jumped to an early 1-0 lead when Eric Heminger led off the game with a home run. The Cardinals added 2 runs in the third, taking advantage of a pair of Ohio Wesleyan errors and getting an RBI ground out from Tory Allen.

Senior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) worked the first 2.0 innings for the Bishops, allowing 3 hits and a run. Senior lefthander Mike Grady (North Canton/Hoover) allowed a pair of unearned runs in 2.0 innings of work and sophomore righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) allowed 1 hit in 2.0 scoreless innings. Sophomore righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) was credited with the win after finishing the game with 3.0 innings of no-hit relief.

Ryne Ratliff started for Otterbein and worked into the seventh, allowing 4 hits and no earned runs. Matt McCool got the Cardinals out of the seventh inning and Matt McCoy pitched the eighth, allowing the tying run before Frank came on to start the ninth. Frank was charged with the loss.
