Wooster
rallied for 4 runs in each game to erase Ohio Wesleyan leads and went
on to sweep the Bishops in semifinal action of the North Coast Athletic
Conference tournament on Saturday at Wooster.
Wooster advances to face Denison in the tournament finals on Thursday
and Friday in Springfield.
In the opener, the Bishops jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With
one out, senior righthander Tyler Mott (Grove City) reached on an infield
single and moved to third on a throwing error by Wooster shortstop Luke
Ullman on a fielder's choice grounder by freshman outfielder Kyle Sherman
(Plain City/Dublin Scioto). Senior catcher Andy Busch (Westerville/South)
was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then freshman first baseman Tom
Bottichio (Mason) ripped a single to put the Bishops on the scoreboard
and senior outfielder Mike Schultheis (Columbus/Watterson) plated another
run with a sacrifice.
Ohio Wesleyan tacked on another run in the second on a double by senior
third baseman Shaun Burchett (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) and a single
by sophomore shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman).
Wooster tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a 3-run homer by Mark
Lucas and took the lead in the bottom of the eighth on Kurt Kapferer's
solo homer.
Mott started on the mound for the Bishops and limited the Scots to 2 hits
over the first 4.0 innings before leaving at the start of the fifth inning.
Sophomore righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) allowed 2 hits and 3
runs over the next 3.2 innings and sophomore lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland),
who pitched the eighth, was charged with the loss.
Luke Katich was the starting pitcher for Wooster and allowed 8 hits and
3 runs over the first 6.0 innings. Brian Miller picked up the win with
3.0 innings of scoreless relief.
In the nightcap, Wooster took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Jake
Frank's RBI double.
The Bishops answered in the bottom of the inning as Sherman walked with
2 out, Busch walked and Bottichio singled home Sherman.
Wooster took a 2-1 lead on Matt Miller's RBI single in the second, but
once again Ohio Wesleyan answered with the equalizer.
Williams led off the bottom of the third with a single and Mott followed
with a single, and the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch.
Williams then scored on Sherman's ground out to tie the game at 2-2.
Frank put Wooster ahead, 3-2, with a solo homer in the fourth, but the
Bishops came back yet again.
Schultheis was hit by a pitch to open the inning and, one out later, senior
outfielder Mike Albert (Shelby) doubled home Schultheis. Albert moved
to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Wooster reliever Jon Oliver and
scored on a single by junior outfielder Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton)
for a 4-3 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Wooster went ahead to stay in the fifth on Matt Miller's grand slam.
Ohio Wesleyan mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth as Albert
reached on a one-out error by Fighting Scot shortstop Ullman. Senior second
baseman Brad Whitman (Canfield) followed with a walk and Williams then
flied to center, with Albert tagging up and advancing to third on the
play. Mott drove in Albert with an infield single, bringing the Bishops
within 7-5 and bringing the winning run to the plate in Sherman, but Oliver
struck out Sherman to end the game.
Burchett started on the mound for the Bishops, pitching 3.2 innings and
allowing 5 hits and 3 runs while striking out 2 and walking 6. Sophomore
righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) allowed 4 hits
and 4 runs in 1.1 innings and was charged with the loss. Nice pitched
2.2 innings of 1-hit relief, senior righthander Byron Lowe (Medford, Mass./Cambridge
Ridge) pitched a scoreless inning and senior lefthander Mike Grady (North
Canton/Hoover) recorded the final out of the ninth.

the first 3-plus innings.
