Ohio
Wesleyan 17, Denison 10
Sept. 20, 2003
Freshman
halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) scored on a 23-yard pass from junior
quarterback Jeff Hanna (Wadsworth) with 2:42 left in regulation time to
lift Ohio Wesleyan over Denison in non-conference action on Saturday in
Granville.
Trailing, 10-7, going into the fourth quarter, Ohio Wesleyan tied the
game on a 29-yard field goal by junior J.D. Winteregg (Englewood/Northmont)
with 9:45 left in the fourth quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan's previous possession had ended when Rice was stopped short
of the first-down marker on fourth-and-2 from the Denison 5-yard line,
but the Big Red were unable to get a first down and punted, with the Bishops
taking over on the Denison 33-yard line. Rice picked up 3 yards on a fourth-and-1
call from the Big Red 24, keeping the drive alive, but when fourth-and-1
came up again, this time from the Denison 12, the Bishops elected to go
for the game-tying field goal.
Denison responded in a hurry, with Phil Bowhuis reeling off gains of 25
and 19 yards and Larry Cappetto finding Josh Jirgens for 21 more to give
the Big Red a first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 24, but on second down,
sophomore linebacker Shawn Quinlan (Waynesfield/Waynesfield-Goshen) recovered
a Denison fumble for the Bishops at the Ohio Wesleyan 20.
Ohio Wesleyan then put together an 80-yard drive that ate over 5 minutes
off the clock, culminating in the Hanna-to-Rice scoring connection. The
Bishops converted a pair of fourth downs during the drive, with sophomore
quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) connecting with sophomore
tight end Colby Welanetz (Carlsbad, Calif.) for 22 yards on the first
and junior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) picking up 3 yards
on fourth-and-1 on the second.
The Big Red picked up one first down on its next possesssion but had to
punt the ball away with just over 2 minutes remaining, and freshman
defensive back Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia) picked off a John Stoll
pass in the closing seconds to seal the win.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 7-0 lead on Indiciani's 4-yard run late in the
first quarter. The Battling Bishops covered 65 yards, all on the ground,
during the drive. Key plays included a 10-yard burst by senior fullback
Chad Smith (Prospect/Elgin) on third-and-4 from the Bishop 41 and a 3-yard
gain by Indiciani on third-and-1 from the Denison 40.
Denison answered on the ensuing possession, assembling a 12-play, 82-yard
drive that was capped by Cappetto's 11-yard pass to C.J. Thomas. The Big
Red converted a fourth-and-1 situation from the Ohio Wesleyan 19, with
Bowhuis picking up the one yard needed to keep the drive alive.
The Big Red took the lead on their next drive, getting good field position
after a Ryan Modica punt return of 13 yards spotted the ball on the Ohio
Wesleyan 45. Cappetto found Jirgens for 26 yards, setting up a 19-yard
field goal by Andy Stromwall with 6:31 left in the first half.
The Bishops turned the ball over twice during the remainder of the first
half, first when Denison's Rob Hackett picked off a Hanna pass at the
Denison 44, and then when Hanna fumbled at the Big Red 28 with :07 left
in the first half after the Bishops had marched 50 yards.
Indiciani led the Bishops with 127 yards in 26 rushes, while Smith finished
with 116 yards in 27 carries. Rice and Welanetz each caught 3 passes for
53 yards. Hanna completed 5 of 15 passes for 84 yards and 1 TD.
Bowhuis led all rushers with 141 yards in 32 attempts. Cappetto completed
8 of 18 passes for 87 yards and a TD.
Senior linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook) led the Bishops
with 9 tackles, including 2 for loss. Sophomore defensive back Jeff King
(Sidney/Piqua) made 7 stops, caused a fumble and broke up a pass; and
sophomore defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.) and sophomore defensive
tackle Doug Rittmeyer (Macedonia/Nordonia) contributed 7 tackles apiece.
