Wooster 37, Ohio Wesleyan 7

Oct. 4, 2003

Richie McNally and Tony Sutton scored touchdowns as Wooster took a 14-0 first quarter lead, then David Puckett ran for 3 scores to seal the game as Wooster defeated Ohio Wesleyan in the Bishops' North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday at Wooster.

Wooster jumped to an early lead when Justin Schafer connected with McNally on a 50-yard scoring pass on the second play from scrimmage.

The Fighting Scots drove 88 yards for a touchdown on their second possession, with Sutton running for 52 of those yards, including a 21-yard scoring run that made it 14-0 with 9:09 left in the first quarter.

Ohio Wesleyan responded quickly, with sophomore quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) scoring on a 36-yard run just :39 later to cap a 2-play, 67-yard drive.

The Bishops manufactured a first down on their next possession, getting good runs from junior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) and sophomore halfback Matt Carducci (Hudson), but the drive bogged down at the Bishop 30 and Ohio Wesleyan punted the ball away.

Wooster came back with an 8-play, 57-yard drive that was capped by a 4-yard run by Puckett with 13:55 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened on each of its next 2 drives, marching into Wooster territory before the drive stalled at the Fighting Scots' 48-yard line. The Bishops got the ball right back when sophomore cornerback Justin Blackburn (Wadsworth) picked off a Schafer pass and ran it back 50 yards to the Wooster 22. Ohio Wesleyan got down to the Fighting Scots' 17-yard line but junior kicker J.D. Winteregg (Englewood/Northmont) had his 34-yard field goal try blocked.

The Scots added a 35-yard field goal by Richie McNally with 2:13 left in the half to make the halftime score 23-7, then got TD runs of 4 and 11 yards by Puckett in the second half.

Freshman halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) led the Bishops with 56 yards in 16 carries, while Sir Louis finished with 52 yards on 6 rushes and Carducci had 48 yards in 12 carries.
