Wabash
21, Ohio Wesleyan 0
Oct. 18, 2003
Russ
Harbaugh threw 2 touchdown passes and Aaron Lafitte ran for another score
as Wabash defeated Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference action
on Saturday at Selby Field.
Wabash jumped to an early lead when Harbaugh connected with Josh Bronaugh
on a 64-yard scoring pass on the third play from scrimmage.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened to tie the score on its first possession, marching
to a first down at the Wabash 32-yard line, but the drive bogged down
there and ended when sophomore quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland)
was sacked on fourth-and-7 from the Little Giant 29.
Both defenses dominated until midway through the second quarter, when
Wabash got good field position after an Ohio Wesleyan punt gave the Little
Giants the ball at the Bishop 41. Harbaugh connected with Eric Summers
for 12 yards, Brandon Roop for 6 and then again for 10 more before Lafitte
capped the drive with a 13-yard gallop around the left end for a 13-0
Wabash lead with 9:33 left in the first half.
Wabash threatened again late in the half, but freshman defensive back
Troy Burkhart (Wooster/Triway) picked off a Harbaugh pass at the goal
line.
Harbaugh was intercepted again early in the second half, this time by
freshman defensive back Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) at the
Ohio Wesleyan 3-yard line. The Bishops were forced to punt and an Ohio
Wesleyan penalty on the return gave Wabash the ball at the Ohio Wesleyan
36. Harbaugh then found Summers for a 36-yard touchdown on the first play
from scrimmage, and ran for a 2-point conversion to raise the lead to
21-0 with 8:13 left in the third quarter.
The Bishops answered again, putting together another long march into Wabash
territory. Key plays included a Sir Louis pass to sophomore halfback Rick
Rodgers (Medina/Parma) for 13 yards on a third-and-12 call, and a 28-yard
run by Sir Louis that set up a first down at the Wabash 11. But the drive
ended when freshman halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) was stopped just
short on a fourth-and-2 play from the Wabash 3.
Rice
led the Bishops with 40 yards in 23 carries, while Sir Louis finished
with 33 yards on 9 rushes. Sir Louis completed 4 of 9 passes for 31 yards,
with 2 of those going to sophomore halfback Ryan Mead (Rockville, Md./Good
Counsel).
Lafitte led Wabash with 49 yards in 17 rushes, while Chris Morris ran
6 times for 26 yards. Harbaugh completed 16 of 24 passes for 212 yards
and 2 TDs, with Bronaugh and Summers each catching 5 passes.
Sophomore defensive back Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) led the Bishops with
9 tackles. Sophomore defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.) contributed
8 tackles, with 3 for loss and 2 sacks, and senior end Travis Little (Wheelersburg)
had 6 stops, including 3 for loss and 2 sacks. Senior linebacker Billy
Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook) added 8 tackles, including 2 tackles for
loss, and senior linebacker Kent Weakley (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) had
6 tackles, including 2 sacks.
