Wittenberg 63, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Oct. 25, 2003

Ryan Holmes threw an 83-yard touchdown pass to Skip Ivery on Wittenberg's first play from scrimmage and Raymar Hampshire ran for 2 touchdowns in the second quarter as Wittenberg defeated Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Springfield.

It was the first time since Nov. 4,
1995, when Allegheny defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 61-0, that an opponent had scored 60 or more points against the Bishops.

The Bishops picked up one first down on the game's opening possession but when freshman halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) was stopped just short of the first down on a third-and-6 play from the Bishop 43, Ohio Wesleyan punted the ball away.

Wittenberg took over on its own 17, setting the stage for Holmes and Ivery to connect on a scoring play, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 10:58 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers added to their lead when Mike Freeman intercepted a pass by sophomore quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) on the Ohio Wesleyan 24 and returned it for a touchdown, giving Wittenberg a 14-0 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with a lengthy drive, with sophomore halfback Matt Carducci (Hudson), junior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) and senior fullback Chad Smith (Prospect/Marion Elgin) each rushing for first downs. Sir Louis came through with another first-down carry, picking up 13 yards on a third-and-11 situation from the Wittenberg 40, but the drive ended when Indiciani was stopped after a 3-yard gain on fourth-and-4 from the Tiger 21-yard line.

The Bishop defense held Wittenberg to a 3-and-out and after Conrad Hindert's punt of 23 yards,
Ohio Wesleyan got the ball back on the Tiger 43, but the Bishops could not take advantage of the field position and had to punt.

Holmes then found Ivery for 46 yards on the last play of the first quarter, and on the first play of the second quarter, Hampshire broke loose on a 16-yard touchdown run for a 21-0 Wittenberg lead.

Once again, Ohio Wesleyan responded with a long march down the field. Carducci came through with a couple of key carries, picking up 8 yards on third-and-9 from the Bishop 48 and then gaining 2 more on the following fourth-and-1 play. Sophomore halfback Ryan Mead (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) ran for another first down -- his second of the drive -- before Carducci picked up 4 yards and then 2 more, giving the Bishops a fourth-and-1 from the Tiger 22, but this time, Carducci was stopped short of the line.

Hampshire reeled off a 27-yard gain on the first play of Wittenberg's ensuing possession and eventually scored on a 3-yard run to make the score 28-0. Holmes connected with Ivery on a 19-yard scoring pass later in the quarter and the first half ended with Wittenberg holding a 35-0 lead.

Senior defensive end Travis Little (Wheelersburg) recovered a Hampshire fumble on the Bishop 17-yard line to thwart the Tigers' first drive of the second half, but later in the quarter, Holmes found Dymond McDonald for consecutive gains of 23 and 36 yards, the latter increasing the lead to 42-0. Tyler Harmon added a 1-yard touchdown run later in the quarter, and Wittenberg tacked on 2 more scores in the fourth quarter to account for the 63-0 final.

Carducci
led the Bishops with 71 yards in 23 carries and caught a team-high 3 passes for 20 yards. Smith finished with 46 yards on 16 rushes. Sir Louis completed 5 of 7 passes for 26 yards.

Hampshire led Wittenberg with 82 yards in 15 rushes, while Joe Brumfield ran 7 times for 70 yards. Holmes completed 11 of 15 passes for 268 yards and 3 TDs, with Ivery catching 5 passes for 164 yards and 2 TDs.

Sophomore defensive back Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) led the Bishops with 9 tackles, including 1 for loss. Senior linebacker Kent Weakley (Plain City/Dublin Scioto)
added 6 tackles.
