Ohio Wesleyan 42, Kenyon 28

Nov. 1, 2003

Sophomore defensive back Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown to break a 21-21 tie and junior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) followed with a 1-yard run as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Kenyon in non-conference play on Saturday in Mount Vernon.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened to take the lead early, taking the opening kickoff and driving into Kenyon territory, but the Bishop drive ended when sophomore halfback Ryan Mead (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) was stopped 2 yards short of a first down on a fourth-and-10 play from the Lord 23.

Alby Coombs broke loose for 56 yards on the Lords' first play from scrimmage, giving Kenyon a first down at the Bishop 29-yard line. Nick Stalick found Brendan McNamara for 16 yards, and after a Kenyon penalty and a Coombs rush for 17 more yards, Stalick connected with Jonathan Robb on a 1-yard pass that put the Lords ahead, 7-0, with 8:47 left in the first quarter.

[ Nick Rice ]The Bishops answered later in the quarter, assembling another methodical march behind
freshman halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) and sophomore quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland). Rice fielded a pass from Sir Louis and picked up 16 yards for a first down, then broke free for a 35-yard gain to spot the Bishops at the Kenyon 16. Sir Louis then gained 12 yards and Rice carried twice from there, going over from 2 yards out to tie the game at 7-7.

Ohio Wesleyan's defense then held Kenyon on a fourth-and-2 call from the Bishop 44, and the Bishop offense ground out another drive. Sophomore halfback Matt Carducci (Hudson) carried 5 times for 46 yards, including a 16-yard scoring burst that gave the Bishops a 14-7 lead with :05 left in the first quarter.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Coombs broke away for a 75-yard scoring run on Kenyon's first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive.

The Bishops answered with another long drive, but Rice fumbled at the Kenyon 13-yard line and the Lords recovered. Brad Noojin picked up one first down with a completion to McNamara, then found Carlin Shoemaker for a 73-yard scoring play that gave Kenyon a 21-14 lead with 8:52 left in the first half.

Rice tied the game at 21-21 with a 1-yard burst with 2:30 left in the half, capping a 56-yard, 11-play drive. Key plays included a pair of third-down runs by Sir Louis to move the chains and a 12-yard burst by Rice that gave the Bishops a first-and-goal from the Kenyon 3.

Kenyon had the first chance to break the 21-21 halftime tie, getting an 18-yard run by Noojin and another by Coombs to move into Bishop territory, but the drive sputtered at the Ohio Wesleyan 15, when sophomore defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.) dropped Coombs for a loss of 1 on a fourth-and-2 call.

King ended the Lords' next possession with his 82-yard interception return, giving Ohio Wesleyan a 28-21 lead with 9:08 left in the third quarter.

The play ignited the Bishop defense, with Clervoix forcing a Noojin fumble on Kenyon's next possession, with sophomore defensive tackle Doug Rittmeyer (Macedonia/Nordonia) recovering for Ohio Wesleyan at the Kenyon 47.

The Bishop offense followed suit, running the ball 7 straight times to cover those 47 yards. Indiciani capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge for a 35-21 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Ohio Wesleyan hiked the lead to 42-21 when Sir Louis found sophomore split end Justin Blackburn (Wadsworth) for a 35-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Kenyon closed to within 42-28 on Phillip Walker's 3-yard run with 2:37 remaining, but the Bishops were able to run out the clock.

Sir Louis led the Bishops with 104 yards on 16 carries, while Rice finished with 101 yards on 25 rushes. Sir Louis completed 5 of 10 passes for 97 yards and a TD, spreading those 6 completions among 6 different receivers.

Coombs led all rushers with 253 yards on 27 carries. Stalick completed 5 of 20 passes for 90 yards and Noojin completed 3 of 7 passes for 84 yards, each throwing a TD pass. McNamara caught 3 passes for lead the Lords.

Senior linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook) led the Bishops with 12 tackles, including 1 1/2 for loss. Clervoix and King followed with 8 stops apiece, with Clervoix adding a tackle for loss and a forced fumble
