Ohio Wesleyan 24, Oberlin 7

Nov. 8, 2003

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to junior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) and sophomore halfback Matt Carducci (Hudson) went over from 12 yards out as the Bishops broke open a close game with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Saturday at Selby Field.

Oberlin threatened to score on the opening possession of the game, with Ryan Squatrito hitting Brandon Neely for 38 yards on the first play from scrimmage. But the Yeomen could not get another first down and, on fourth down, sent in Ryan Drews to try a 41-yard field goal with a brisk breeze at his back. But senior defensive end Travis Little (Wheelersburg) deflected the kick and it fell short of the goal post.

The Yeomen took the lead later in the first quarter after recovering a Sir Louis fumble at the Ohio Wesleyan 8-yard line. Two plays later, Travis Oman went over from 3 yards out to give the Yeomen a 7-0 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan fumbled the ball away on its next possession, this time at the Oberlin 8-yard line after a drive of 71 yards. Key plays in the march were a 24-yard burst by sophomore halfback Ryan Mead (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel), with a 23-yard gain by Sir Louis following on the next play. Mead added another 12-yard gain later in the possession.

Oberlin could not get a first down, and junior cornerback Brian Gamble (Massillon/Perry) returned Drews' punt 11 yards to the Yeomen 42 to give the Bishops excellent field position.

The Yeomen defense was just as sturdy, forcing the Bishops to punt on fourth-and-6 from the Oberlin 38, but a running-into-the-kicker penalty resulted in a fourth-and-1 situation from the Oberlin 33. This time, the Bishops went for it and Mead reeled off a 13-yard burst down to the Yeomen 20. Facing another fourth down from the 11, the Bishops turned to Mead again, and he came through by covering the final 11 yards for the tying touchdown with 1:39 left in the first quarter.

The second quarter was a punting duel, with the lone exception being an Ohio Wesleyan drive late in the period. Indiciani ripped off a 43-yard scamper to the Oberlin 22, but the Bishops could not get another first down. Junior J.D. Winteregg (Englewood/Northmont) came on to try a 41-yard field goal, but his attempt was wide left.

Winteregg redeemed himself on the opening possession of the second half, converting a 19-yard field goal attempt that gave the Bishops a 10-7 lead. The Bishops started the half on the Oberlin 48 after a fine return by freshman Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia), and moved closer when Oberlin was flagged for personal foul and then pass interference on the first 2 plays of the drive. Freshman halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) ran for a first down before the Bishops went for the field goal on fourth-and-goal from the Oberlin 2.

The Bishop defense took over from there, allowing Oberlin only 1 first down during the third quarter and only 2 during the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the Ohio Wesleyan offense put together a pair of long drives in the fourth quarter.

Taking over at their own 12-yard line on their first possession of the period, the Bishops turned to Rice. Faced with a first-and-18 after an Ohio Wesleyan holding penalty, Rice threw a pass to freshman split end Steven Asbeck (Boynton Beach, Fla./Pope John Paul II) for 23 yards and a first down. Rice then ran for 15 yards for another first down, and on third-and-4 on the following series, ran for 20 more yards and a first down at the Oberlin 21. Three plays later, on fourth-and-10 from the 21, Sir Louis found Indiciani in the back of the end zone for a touchdown that made it 17-7 with 9:35 left in regulation time.

Oberlin got one first down on its next possession, but the Yeomen soon found themselves in a fourth-and-8 situation and went for it, with Squatrito's pass falling incomplete on the play.

The Bishops then marched down the field, with senior fullback Chad Smith (Prospect/Marion Elgin) gaining the first 18 yards and Carducci the final 12 to cap a 6-play, 52-yard drive that iced the game.

Sir Louis led the Bishops with 89 yards on 17 carries, while Rice finished with 83 yards on 19 rushes and Mead had 72 yards on 7 carries. Sir Louis completed 6 of 15 passes for 46 yards and a TD. Asbeck led the Bishops with 3 catches for 40 yards and Indiciani caught 2 passes for 19 yards.

Oman led Oberlin with 47 yards on 16 carries. Squatrito completed 13 of 29 passes for 110 yards. Brandon Neely caught 4 passes for 51 yards and Brian Senne caught 4 passes for 29 yards for Oberlin.

Senior linebacker Billy Chrisovergis (Dayton/Bellbrook) led the Bishops with 11 tackles, including 1 for loss. Sophomore defensive back Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) followed with 9 stops and added a pass breakup, freshman defensive back Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia) had 8 tackles, caused a fumble and broke up a pass, while sophomore defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.) had 5 tackles, including a sack and 2 others for loss. Little added 3 stops, including 2 sacks
