Poling (Delaware/Hayes) won the NCAA Division III individual men's golf
championship at the NCAA Division III men's golf championships on Thursday
at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club at Oak Valley in Beaumont,
Calif.
Poling shot an even-par 72 on Thursday to finish with a 282, setting an
NCAA Division III tournament record for lowest score under par
(-6). He won medalist honors by two strokes over Luke Benoit of Gustavus
Adolphus, who shot a tournament-record-tying 65 on Thursday to finish
at 284, moving up from sixth place to second on the final day.
Poling's 282 also broke the school record for a 72-hole total, topping
the previous mark of 290 set by Barry Pry in 1990.
Poling is Ohio Wesleyan's first national champion in golf. The NCAA tournament
title was the sixth in a row won by Poling, who was medalist in the final
4 tournaments of the regular season before winning individual honors at
the North Coast Athletic Conference championship.
Gustavus Adolphus won the team title, shooting a 292 on the final day
to finish with a 4-day total of 1178. Host Redlands finished in second
place, shooting a 298 to finish at 1190, one shot ahead of Greensboro
(1191) and 2 shots ahead of Methodist (1192).
Emory finished in fifth place at 1194, followed by LaVerne (1199), Ohio
Wesleyan (1200) and Nebraska Wesleyan (1213), with Central and Oglethorpe
tied for ninth place at 1215.
Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished 11th at 1120, followed by Guilford (1222)
and St. John's (1227). Denison finished 14th with a total of 1234, with
California Lutheran next at 1239 and Otterbein in 16th place at 1240,
followed by Skidmore (1243), Rochester (1249), Allegheny and LaGrange
(1251), Wesley (1267), St. Lawrence (1269) and New York University (1274).
For Ohio Wesleyan, sophomore Justin Schroeder (Shelby) shot a 75 on Thursday
and finished in a tie for 15th place among individuals at 297.
Sophomore Doug McCullough (Sleepy Hollow, Ill./St. Edward) had a 70 on
Thursday and tied for 62nd place at 312, senior Joe Loudenslager (Hilliard/Darby)
shot a 79 on Thursday and tied for 77th place at 316, and senior Adam
Pry (Bucyrus/Shelby) had an 86 on Thursday and tied for 95th place at
322.
