Ohio Wesleyan 84, Case Reserve 73

Senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) converted a 3-point play to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then scored 5 points to highlight a 9-0 run that gave the Bishops breathing room as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Case Reserve in non-conference action on Monday in Cleveland.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a quick 5-0 lead on a basket by sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) and a 3-pointer by junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks), but the Spartans answered with a pair of Dave Lenzer baskets and a 3-pointer by Carsen Oren to take a 9-5 lead.

Senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) helped keep the Bishops close, scoring 3 times to bring Ohio Wesleyan within a point, but Case Reserve got 2 more baskets from Oren to take a 17-12 lead. The Spartans would lead by as many as 11 points during the first half, taking a 33-22 advantage on Tim Koenig's 3-pointer with 3:18 left in the half.

The Bishops closed to within 5 points on Schwab's 3-point play and 3 more Schwab free throws that made the score 33-28, and the teams traded points twice before CWRU took a 37-32 lead at halftime.

Andrew Impastato hit a jumper to open the second-half scoring for Case Reserve, extending the Spartan lead to 39-32, but Ohio Wesleyan came back to take the lead as Schwab scored 3 baskets and Smith added another to comprise an 8-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead, 40-39.

Two minutes later, with the score tied at 42-42, Smith converted a 3-point play to give Ohio Wesleyan a 45-42 lead.

Case Reserve closed to within one point at 47-46 on Matt Cannan's bucket with 13:31 left in regulation time, but Smith hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to kick off a 9-0 run. Freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and junior guard Bryan King (Sidney) followed with baskets that raised the Bishop lead to 56-46 with 11:07 to play, and the Spartans would come closer than 10 points only once during the remainder of the game.

Schwab led the Bishops with 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Smith followed with 18 points and Chojnacki added 12 points and led Ohio Wesleyan with 11 rebounds. Rybarczyk, King and freshman wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Funso Lafe led the Spartans with 24 points, Oren added 14 points and Cannan scored 11 points. Lenzer led Case Reserve with 8 rebounds.
