Ohio Wesleyan 84, Denison 61

Senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) and sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) each scored 4 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 10-3 run and pulled away for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Denison on Wednesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

Senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) opened the night's scoring with a jumper from the lane, then Schwab and Warnock each contributed 2 baskets from the paint, sandwiched around a 3-pointer by Denison's John Wagner, as Ohio Wesleyan took a 10-3 lead.

Clint Shepherd kept the Big Red close, hitting a trio of 3-point baskets, and when Tony Julian hit a jumper from the right baseline, Denison was within 28-22 with 8:21 left in the first half.

Warnock then soared for a tip-in that kicked off a 17-5 Ohio Wesleyan run. Schwab, freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) each hit 3-pointers during the run, with Chojnacki, Schwab and Warnock adding 2 more points apiece.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a 11-3 run that featured 6 points by Schwab and a Warnock 3-pointer, giving the Bishops a 56-32 lead just over 5 minutes into the second half. Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 32 points before Denison ended the game with a 12-3 run.

Schwab led the Bishops with 23 points, Chojnacki added 14 points and Warnock contributed 11 points. Smith led Ohio Wesleyan with 7 rebounds and sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) had a team-high 6 assists.

Shepherd led the Big Red with 18 points, all coming from outside the arc, and shared the team leads with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Wagner added 11 points and shared the team lead with 3 rebounds and Danny Hodgkinson scored 10 points and shared the team lead with 3 rebounds. Chris Hull also shared the team lead with 3 rebounds and Matt Streicher shared the team lead with 3 assists.
