Ohio Wesleyan 79, Allegheny 63

Senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) had 6 points and freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) added 4 points during a 10-0 first-half run and Ohio Wesleyan used a pair of 8-0 runs during the second half to break open a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Saturday afternoon at Branch Rickey Arena.

With the Bishops leading, 19-18, with just over 8 minutes left in the first half, Chojnacki hit a jumper from the lane, Schwab and Chojnacki followed with lay-ins and Schwab hit 2 more baskets as Ohio Wesleyan extended its lead to 29-18 with 4:49 left in the period.

Allegheny rallied with a barrage of 3-pointers, with Jon Turner, Billy Dungee and Matt Magnusen each connecting from behind the arc to bring the Gators within 32-27, but after the teams traded baskets, the Bishops ended the first half with baskets by Chojnacki, junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) and senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) to take a 40-29 lead at the break.

The Gators closed to within 46-39 just over 5 minutes into the second half, but in a span of less than 2 minutes, Schwab hit 2 free throws, Chojnacki scored twice from in close and freshman wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) scored on a fast break to hike the Bishop lead to 54-39.

Matt Majzlik rallied Allegheny with a 3-point play and a hook shot from the lane, helping the Gators come within 56-45 at the midway point of the second half, but the Bishops came back with another 8-0 burst, this time featuring a pair of Smith baskets, a Schwab 3-pointer and a Uritus free throw.

Sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) iced the game with 9 consecutive points, scoring twice on fast breaks before burying a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws that increased the Bishop lead to 73-47 with 4:40 remaining.

Schwab led the Bishops with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Warnock added 15 points, Chojnacki scored 12 points and Smith finished with 10 points.

Majzlik led Allegheny with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Magnusen finished with 14 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds. Mike Sefscik and Casey McCloskey shared the team lead with 2 assists apiece.
