Ohio Wesleyan 91, Earlham 60

Jan. 24, 2004

Sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) kicked off an 8-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then scored 6 points to open a 15-0 second-half burst that sealed a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Earlham on Saturday afternoon at Branch Rickey Arena.

Warnock scored on a drive to the hoop to break a 5-5 tie and put the Bishops ahead to stay, then senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) hit a lay-in and senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) added 2 lay-ins to give the Bishops a 13-5 lead with 14:20 left in the first half.

Earlham closed to within 18-15 on a 3-pointer by Jon Miller with 11:34 left in the half, but freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored twice to highlight an 8-2 run that increased the Bishop lead to 27-17.

The Quakers came back with a Markous Jewett basket and a 3-pointer by Tyler Stewart to slice the deficit to 27-22, but Ohio Wesleyan bunched a Schwab lay-in, a Warnock 3-pointer and a Smith baseline jumper to hike the lead to 34-22.

Warnock finished the first half with an exclamation point with a basket off an offensive rebound with :02 left, giving the Bishops a 40-26 lead at the intermission.

He then drained a 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring, and less than a minute later, sank 3 straight free throws after drawing a foul on a 3-point attempt. Warnock's 6 points began a 15-0 Ohio Wesleyan run to open the second half. The Bishop run also featured a follow shot and a 3-pointer by junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks).

Smith led the Bishops with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Schwab finished with 17 points, Warnock had 16 points and Chojnacki added 14 points. Reed and sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) shared the team lead with 6 assists apiece.

Schwab's 5 rebounds increased his career total to 680, moving him into 10th place on the Ohio Wesleyan list ahead of Eric Morris, who compiled 677 rebounds during the 1969-73 seasons.

Jewett led Earlham with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Jermaine Crumby added 15 points and Miller had a team-high 3 assists.
