Ohio Wesleyan 70, Hiram 47

Jan. 31, 2004

[ Charlie Smith ]Senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) and sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) scored 4 points apiece during an 8-0 run that squelched a Hiram comeback and the Battling Bishops went to to record a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Terriers on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 29-15 halftime lead, and the Bishops added to the margin quickly at the beginning of the second half. Smith hit a follow shot, then senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) converted a 3-point play and sank a jumper from the right baseline to give the Bishops a 36-15 lead less than 2 minutes into the period.

Hiram rallied behind the scoring of Carlton Dean, who had a 3-pointer and a pair of baskets in the paint, and Rick Baldwin, who contributed a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, to slice the deficit to 45-33 with 11:00 left in regulation time.

After a Bishop timeout, Ohio Wesleyan responded with a Warnock drive, a Smith putback, a Warnock fast break bucket and a Smith jumper, all in a span of 1:40, to increase its lead to 53-33 with 8:53 left to play.

Dean and A.J. White helped the Terriers come within 54-39 with 7:32 to play, but the Bishops iced the game with a 13-3 run, holding Hiram to one basket during the next 5-plus minutes of action.

Smith opened the game's scoring with a lay-in, but Hiram soon took a 4-2 lead on a nifty reverse layup by Dean and a White fast break basket.

Warnock followed with back-to-back 3-pointers to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then Schwab scored 4 points as the Bishops finished a 15-3 run that made the score 17-7 with 7:35 left in the first half.

Schwab led the Bishops with 23 points, while Smith finished with 18 points and Warnock added 10 points and shared the team lead with 8 rebounds. Junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) also shared the team lead with 8 rebounds, matching his career high. Sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) led Ohio Wesleyan with 7 assists.

Dean led Hiram with 15 points. Joe Butvin and Allen Kirkpatrick shared the team lead with 6 rebounds apiece. Brandon Pool had a team-high 4 assists for the Terriers.
