Ohio Wesleyan 66, Wabash 47

[ Ben Chojnacki ]Freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored 9 straight points to finish off a 12-1 burst that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wabash on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Scoring was at a premium during the early minutes of the game. The teams traded baskets in the second minute before sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) hit a 3-pointer for a 5-2 Bishop lead with 16:11 left in the first half.

Three minutes later, Rich McCracken tied the game with a 3-pointer for Wabash, and Ronnie Ragains followed with a runner in the lane to give the Little Giants a 7-5 lead with 12:24 left in the first half.

Freshman wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) answered with a basket on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, but Wabash took an 8-7 lead on Alex Rinks' free throw at the midway point of the first half.

The Bishops got a 3-pointer by junior wing Bryan King (Sidney) and a basket by senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg), with Wabash countering with baskets by Caleb Lyttle and Kyle Coffey, the latter tying the game at 12-12 with 7:20 left in the first half.

Junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) then put the Bishops ahead to stay with a follow shot and added a free throw for a 15-12 Ohio Wesleyan lead. Chojnacki added a free throw and drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to increase the Bishop lead to 19-12 with 4:34 left in the first half.

Wabash got a Ragains free throw to close to within 19-13, but Chojnacki answered with a putback and another 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan a 24-13 lead.

The Little Giants sliced the deficit to 7 points on Mark Bower's 3-point play with :14 left in the half, but senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) answered with a reverse lay-in to end the first-half scoring.

The Bishops pulled away in the second half, as Warnock and King each hit a pair of 3-pointers to help build the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 55-37 with 7:24 left in regulation time.

Warnock led the Bishops with 17 points. King and Chojnacki finished with 11 points apiece. Schwab led the Bishops with 12 rebounds and sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) had a team-high 4 assists.

Schwab's 12 rebounds increased his career total to 711, moving him into seventh place on the Ohio Wesleyan list ahead of Bob Croft, who compiled 700 rebounds during the 1990-94 seasons.

Coffey led the Little Giants with 14 points and shared the team lead with 5 rebounds. McCracken also shared the team lead with 5 rebounds.
