Wittenberg 60, Ohio Wesleyan 50

Feb. 18, 2004

Peter Walker scored 9 straight points to kick off a 10-0 run in the last 4 minutes as Wittenberg pulled away from Ohio Wesleyan for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan had closed to within 47-46 on a free throw by senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) with 3:52 remaining, but Walker hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key -- Wittenberg's only 3-pointer of the game -- on the Tigers' next possession to increase the lead to 4 points.

Walker followed with a jumper from the right baseline with 1:54 to play, then added 2 free throws with 1:23 remaining and 2 more free throws with :41 left, giving the Tigers a 56-46 lead. Kenny Brady completed the Wittenberg run with a free throw with :31 to play.

Sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) hit a pair of follow shots in the closing seconds to close out the Ohio Wesleyan scoring.

Wittenberg jumped out to a 6-0 lead on baskets by Daniel Russ, Brady and Dane Borchers before Warnock put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a jumper with 15:06 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan battled back to within 14-13 on a 3-pointer by junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) with 8:47 left in the first half, and after the Tigers had increased their lead to 20-15, the Bishops answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Warnock and junior wing Bryan King (Sidney) to take their first lead of the game at 21-20.

Russ hit 2 free throws to give the lead back to Wittenberg, but Ohio Wesleyan closed the first half with a pair of baskets by senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) to take a 25-22 lead into the locker toom.

Brady kept the Tigers close early in the second half, getting a shooter's bounce on a jumper from the lane and then hitting a runner in the lane to match a pair of Schwab baskets.

After Smith hit a pair of free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 31-26 lead, the Tigers scored 6 straight points, with Borchers scoring twice in close for a 32-31 Wittenberg lead.

Ohio Wesleyan came back to take a 36-32 lead on a basket by freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and a 3-pointer by Warnock, but the Tigers tied it at 36-36, then broke a 38-38 tie with a Borchers 3-point play and a hook shot by Andy Bucheit.

The Bishops came back once more, getting a jumper from Smith, a Schwab lay-in and a Smith 3-pointer to take a 45-43 lead with 5:19 to play.

Wittenberg got scores from Brady and Russ to take a 47-45 lead and set up the final 4 minutes of regulation time.

Smith and Schwab shared the Bishop scoring lead with 15 points apiece, and Warnock finished with 12 points. Schwab led the Bishops with 8 rebounds and Reed had a team-high 4 assists.

Schwab's 15 points increased his career total to 1906, moving him into second place on the Ohio Wesleyan list ahead of Barry Clemens, who scored 1905 points during the 1961-65 seasons.

Borchers led the Tigers with 17 points. Brady added 14 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds, and Walker had 13 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds. Danny Brywczynski led the Tigers with 3 assists.
