Wooster 63, Ohio Wesleyan 52

Feb. 21, 2004

Justin Bradley scored 2 baskets as Wooster opened the second half with a 12-3 run and held Ohio Wesleyan off down the stretch to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan will be seeded third in the upcoming NCAC tournament and will host sixth-seeded Earlham at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday in quarterfinal action.

After a nip-and-tuck first half that ended with Ohio Wesleyan holding a 29-27 lead, the Fighting Scots tied the game on a fast break bucket by P.J. McCloud in the first minute of the second half.

The Bishops took the lead back when senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) hit the second of 2 free throws for a 30-29 Bishop lead with 18:56 to play.

Bradley followed with a scoop shot from the lane, and on Wooster's next possession, banked home a jumper from the right side of the lane to give the Scots a 33-30 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 33-32 on a pair of free throws by senior post Travis Schwab (Medina), but Wooster answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Kyle Witucky and Blake Mealer to increase the lead to 39-32 with 14:21 remaining.

The Bishops sliced the deficit to 46-43 when freshman wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) converted a 4-point play with 7:36 remaining, but Bradley drove to the basket on Wooster's next possession to seize back the momentum.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied once more, closing to within 57-50 on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) with 2:01 left, but Wooster put the game away at the free throw line.

The first half featured 7 lead changes and 3 ties. Ohio Wesleyan jumped to an early 6-2 lead behind the scoring of Smith and Schwab, but Wooster eventually tied the game at 8-8 on a pair of 3-pointers by Witucky.

After the Scots took a 23-19 lead on Mealer's lay-in with 6:53 left in the half, Ohio Wesleyan responded with a 10-2 run that was punctuated by 3-pointers from Uritus and junior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks), the latter giving the Bishops a 29-25 lead with 1:00 left in the half.

Schwab led the Bishops with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Uritus followed with 12 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists, and Smith finished with 10 points. Rybarczyk also shared the team lead with 3 assists.

Snyder led the Scots with 13 points. Tom Port added 12 points, and Witucky and Mealer each scored 11 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds. Rodney Mitchell led the Scots with 4 assists.
