Feb. 24, 2004

[ Andy Warnock ]Sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) hit a pair of 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan broke a 22-22 tie with a 14-3 run and pulled away during the second half to record a win over Earlham in a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the tournament semifinals, where the Bishops will face second-seeded Wooster at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Springfield. The second semifinal contest will match fourth-seeded Wabash against top-seeded Wittenberg. The semifinal winners will play for the NCAC tournament title at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Springfield.

Most of the first half was a well-played, back-and-forth battle that featured 10 lead changes and 8 ties during the first 15 minutes of action. Earlham's biggest lead was at 16-13, when Jermaine Crumby hit a 3-pointer and followed with a pair of free throws, but the Bishops erased that deficit with a lay-in by senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) and a 3-pointer by junior wing Bryan King (Sidney).

Earlham's Markous Jewett hit a jumper from the lane to tie the game at 22-22 with 5:03 left in the first half.

The Bishops took the lead for good when senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) followed with a lay-in, and King canned a jumper from the right baseline before Schwab hit the second of 2 free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 27-22 lead.

Jewett kept the Quakers close, hitting a 3-pointer from the top of the key, but Warnock answered with a 3-pointer with 2:57 to play and another one with 1:24 on the clock. Schwab added a lay-in to cap the Bishop run and give Ohio Wesleyan a 36-25 lead in the last minute of the half.

Jewett ended the Earlham slump with a jumper from the lane with :14 left, but Warnock seized the momentum for Ohio Wesleyan with a driving hoop just before the halftime buzzer.

Ohio Wesleyan put the game away with a 15-0 run early in the second half, with Smith scoring 8 points and freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) adding 5 more. The Bishop spurt hiked the lead to 57-31 with 11:31 left in the game.

Schwab led the Bishops with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Smith finished with 14 points, Warnock added 13 points and Chojnacki contributed 12 points. Sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) led the Bishops with 9 assists.

LaRon Henry led the Quakers with 13 points. Evan Ogburn, Crumby and Jewett finished with 11 points apiece. Henry and Mike Bradley shared the team lead with 5 rebounds and Tyler Stewart led Earlham with 2 assists.
