Ohio Northern 62, Ohio Wesleyan 48

Ohio Northern opened the game with a 17-2 run and held off an Ohio Wesleyan comeback in defeating the Bishops in the first round of the Calvin Tip-Off Tournament on Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Battling Bishops will play Grace Bible in the tournament consolation game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while Calvin and Ohio Northern will square off in the championship game at 3 p.m. Calvin defeated Grace Bible, 109-71, in Friday's other first-round game.

Both teams opened the game ice-cold from the field. Neither team scored until Ohio Northern's Billy Barkimer hit the second of two free throws to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead with 17:45 left in the first half. Mark Killian, Jim Conrad and Sam Mikolajewski followed with buckets before Killian's lay-in hiked the Ohio Northern lead to 9-0 with 13:26 left in the half.

Freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) finally put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a lay-in with 11:29 left, but the Polar Bears scored the next 8 points to hike the lead to 17-2 with 7:41 left in the half.

After shooting 19.2 percent (5 of 26) from the field during the first half, Ohio Wesleyan trailed by a score of 31-14 at halftime.

The beginning of the second half was a different story, however, as the Bishops were as hot then as they were cold at the start of the game. Led by Chojnacki, senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) and junior post Brandon Reid (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian), Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 36-30 on Reid's lay-in with 10:43 left in regulation time.

Ohio Northern, however, responded with back-to-back 3-pointers by Nate Leib and Conrad and the Polar Bears kept the lead in double figures throughout the rest of the game.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Smith finished with 11 points. Sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) led the Bishops with 3 assists. Ohio Wesleyan was playing without preseason All-America selection Travis Schwab.

Conrad led the Polar Bears with 20 points, while Mikolajewski added 10 points. Killian had a team-high 11 rebounds and Barkimer led Ohio Northern with 4 assists.
