Freshman wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) scored
5 points during the final 1:20 of regulation to send the game into overtime
and Ohio Wesleyan went 9-for-10 from the free throw line in overtime to
defeat Capital in Game 3 of the inaugural NCAC/OAC Challenge on Sunday
at Mount Union College in Alliance.
Wooster defeated Mount Union, 71-56, in the second game on Sunday to give
the NCAC 3 wins in the 4-game set.
Capital opened the game with a 6-0 run, but the Bishops came back to take
a 14-10 lead. Senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) and senior post Charlie
Smith (Centerburg) each had 4 points during that stretch and sophomore
guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) and sophomore wing Andy
Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) each contributed a 3-pointer.
The Crusaders countered with an 11-5 burst fueled by Sam Smith's 4 points.
Capital did not trail again during the first half, which ended with the
Crusaders holding a 26-23 lead. Neither team shot well from outside during
the first half, with Capital going 1-for-10 (10 percent) from 3-point
range and the Bishops hitting 3 of 15 (20 percent) from beyond the arc.
Ohio Wesleyan got 6 straight points from Schwab to open the second half,
and after baskets by Rybarczyk and Smith, the Bishops held a 33-31 lead
with 16:15 left in regulation time.
Capital then went on a 16-0 run, with Mark Denner hitting a lay-in and
capping the burst with back-to-back 3-pointers that gave the Crusaders
a 47-33 lead at the midway point of the period.
The Bishops still trailed by 10 points at 49-39 with 5:46 left before
Schwab hit a free throw, Rybarczyk sank 2 free throws and Smith drilled
a 3-pointer to slice the deficit to 49-45. Denner answered with a 3-pointer
for Capital, and after Schwab and Jake Beck traded points, the Crusaders
still led by a score of 54-47 with 1:46 remaining.
Rybarczyk then hit a basket with 1:31 left, and Uritus sank a pair of
free throws with 1:20 to play to make it 54-51 before Uritus tied the
game with a 3-pointer with :10 on the clock, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, Denner hit another 3-pointer to give Capital a 57-56 lead,
but Smith scored to put the Bishops ahead to stay and Uritus and Schwab
followed with baskets to give the Bishops a 62-57 lead with 1:30 remaining.
Capital twice closed to within 2 points, the second time on a 3-pointer
by David Johnson with :05 left, but freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina)
sank a pair of free throws to account for the 69-65 final.
Schwab
led the Bishops with 22 points and 8 rebounds, while Smith scored 18 points
and Rybarczyk had 11 points. Warnock contributed 7 boards and Rybarczyk
had a team-high 5 assists.
Denner led Capital with 14 points and Beck added 10 points. Tyler Schleich
had a team-high 10 rebounds and Beck led the Crusaders with 5 assists.
