Wesleyan 76, Ohio Dominican 63
Dec.
10, 2003
Junior guard Bryan King (Sidney) sank a pair of 3-pointers
as Ohio Wesleyan closed the first half with a 10-0 run and the Battling
Bishops broke the game open with a 17-2 second-half spurt in taking a
non-conference win over Ohio Dominican in the Bishops' home opener on
Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The first half featured 9 lead changes and 6 ties during the first 15
minutes. Ohio Dominican's Kevin Nye hit a free throw to tie the game at
19-19 with 4:58 left in the half before the Panthers' Jeremy Renner followed
with a jumper from the lane and Mike Febig canned a 3-pointer to give
Ohio Dominican a 24-19 lead.
King responded with a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and
freshman wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) tied the game with a fast
break lay-in before senior post Travis Schwab (Medina) put the Bishops
ahead to stay with a layup. King closed out the run with a 3-pointer with
:30 left in the half, giving the Bishops a 29-24 halftime lead.
Senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) hit a bucket from the paint and
another from 3-point range to spark the Bishops at the beginning of the
second half, boosting the lead to 38-27 before the Panthers came back.
Luke Lyle hit a 3-pointer and Micah Stith went 3-for-4 from the line as
Ohio Dominican closed the gap to 40-35, but the Bishops answered with
a 17-2 run, with sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes), Schwab
and freshman post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) each contributing 4 points. The
run gave the Bishops a 57-37 lead with 10:08 left in regulation time.
Lyle followed with a driving lay-in and added a free throw to convert
a 3-point play, only the second basket for Ohio Dominican in nearly 7
minutes of playing time. The Panthers rallied on the scoring of Stith
and some aggressive defense to close within 10 points at 68-58 with 1:26
remaining. The comeback continued when Haze Massey hit another 3-pointer
and Jack Swartz added 2 free throws to bring Ohio Dominican within 71-63
with :54 left.
Ohio Wesleyan broke the Panther press on its next possession, with Schwab
scoring on the break, and junior
wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) followed with another fast-break
bucket to ice the game.
Schwab led
the Bishops with 21 points and 11 rebounds and shared the team lead with
6 assists. Schwab's 21 points raised his career total to 1568, moving
him into fifth place on the all-time Ohio Wesleyan scoring list.
King added 11 points and Chojnacki finished with 10 points.
Stith led Ohio Dominican with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Massey added 11
points and Renner led the Panthers with 2 assists.
