Ohio Wesleyan 89, Maryville 88

Dec. 27, 2003

Sophomore wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) hit 3 straight 3-pointers in overtime as Ohio Wesleyan erased a 5-point deficit and defeated 19th-ranked Maryville (Tenn.) in first-round action of the Otterbein "O" Club Classic on Saturday night in Westerville.

Ohio Wesleyan will play Otterbein in the championship game at 8 p.m. on Sunday, while Maryville will face Westminster (Pa.) in the consolation game at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Otterbein defeated Westminster, 80-65, in Saturday's other first-round game.

Maryville's Jason Doan hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring in overtime, and after the Bishops closed to within 79-77, Doan hit another 3-pointer to give the Fighting Scots an 82-77 lead with 2:45 left in the extra session.

Warnock responded with a 3-pointer on the Bishops' next possession to once again make it a 2-point game, and after Maryville misfired the next time down the court, Warnock drilled another 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan an 83-82 lead and put the Bishops ahead to stay.

Warnock made it 3 in a row with another long-range bomb with :38 remaining, but Doan came back with a 3-pointer of his own to bring Maryville within 86-85 with :29 to play.

Junior guard Bryan King (Sidney) then hit a lay-in as the Bishops broke the Fighting Scot press, giving Ohio Wesleyan an 88-85 lead with :19 left, and after Doan missed a game-tying 3-point shot, King snared the rebound and was fouled, and the Bishop guard hit the second free throw to hike the lead to 89-85, allowing Ohio Wesleyan to withstand Ruben Gonzalez' 3-pointer at the buzzer.

In the early going, Maryville's Raul Placeres hit a free throw to break a 4-4 tie and give the Fighting Scots a 5-4 lead with 16:29 left in the first half.

That would prove to be Maryville's only lead during regulation time. Ohio Wesleyan answered with baskets by senior post Travis Schwab (Medina), King and sophomore guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) to take a 10-5 lead, and after Maryville closed to within 10-8 on a Doan 3-pointer, the Bishops went on an 11-3 tear to open up a 21-10 lead. King hit a pair of 3-pointers and Warnock added another to fuel the Bishop run.

Maryville closed to within 5 points on a pair of occasions, the second at 24-19 on a Doan 3-pointer, but the Bishops went on a 10-0 run late in the first half to take their biggest lead of the game at 34-19 with 2:16 left in the period. Schwab scored 7 points, including a 3-point play, and King drilled another 3-pointer during that Bishop spurt.

Ohio Wesleyan led, 37-25, at halftime as the Bishops shot 54 percent from the field (14 of 26) to 36 percent (11 of 31) for Maryville.

The Bishops held on to the lead for most of the second half and led, 69-58, with 5:59 left in regulation time before Maryville rallied as Doan hit a 3-pointer and Walden Buttram converted a 3-point play to bring the Fighting Scots within 71-66 with 3:40 left.

Schwab sank a free throw to give the Bishops a 6-point lead, but Maryville closed to within 72-70 on lay-ins by Bobby Golden and Buttram off Ohio Wesleyan turnovers on back-to-back possessions, the latter with 2:46 to play.

Schwab sank a pair of free throws with 2:23 remaining to give the Bishops a 4-point lead, but Maryville came back with a Golden tip-in
with 1:35 to go and tied the game on a third-chance tip-in by Buttram with :50 to play.

Warnock missed a 3-pointer on the Bishops' next possession and Maryville cleared the rebound, but Gonzalez missed a runner in the lane with :15 to play. Rybarczyk cleared the rebound and turned upcourt for the potential game-winning bucket for the Bishops, but his coast-to-coast drive ended with a charging call with :03 left in regulation, and Maryville's shot from halfcourt at the buzzer was short.

Schwab led the Bishops with 28 points and 9 rebounds, while Warnock finished with 24 points, going 6-for-10 from 3-point range. King added 17 points and senior post Charlie Smith (Centerburg) added 11 points. Freshman wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) led the Bishops with 9 assists.

Doan led the Fighting Scots with 28 points, Buttram added 13 points, Placeres scored 11 points and Paul Reed and Golden each added 10 points for Maryville.
