Ohio Wesleyan 14, Wittenberg 9

Junior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga), junior attacker Jason Balmer (Chester Springs, Pa./Forman School) and freshman attacker Brian McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) each scored twice as Ohio Wesleyan finished the first half with a 9-0 run and went on to defeat Wittenberg in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday at Selby Field.

Wittenberg had jumped to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Sammy Hong, but the Bishops tied the game on Schlegel's first goal of the day.

The Tigers then took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Adam Morrison less than a minute later.

Balmer followed with a goal off an assist from sophomore attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) to tie the game at 2-2, then Law scored less than a minute later to put the Bishops ahead to stay.

Ohio Wesleyan finished the first quarter with goals by Schlegel and sophomore midfielder Chris Riehl (Columbus/Upper Arlington) for a 6-2 lead.

The Bishops then got 2 goals from McCommons and single goals by Balmer and freshman midfielder Chad Pouliot (Ridgewood, N.J.) while holding Wittenberg to just one shot during the second quarter.

Balmer and Law added goals during the third quarter, and Schlegel scored early in the fourth period to give the Bishops a 13-3 lead.

Wittenberg rallied in the fourth period, with Hong contributing 2 goals and 2 assists during the quarter.

Schlegel led the Bishops with 5 goals and an assist, while Balmer finished with 3 goals and an assist. Law added 2 goals and 2 assists and McCommons had 2 goals.

Hong led Wittenberg with 4 goals and 2 assists.

Sophomore Read Allen (Snyder, N.Y./Amherst) made his first collegiate start in the Ohio Wesleyan goal and made 5 saves.

Kyle Prussing had 12 saves in the Tiger cage.
