Ohio Wesleyan 2, Capital 1
North Park 1, Bethany 0

Aug. 29, 2003

Senior forward Aaron Barone (Westerville/South) scored with 1:26 left in the second overtime to lift Ohio Wesleyan to a win over Capital in the first round of the Fred Myers Invitational on Friday night at Roy Rike Field.

Ohio Wesleyan will face North Park (Ill.) in Saturday's championship game, to be preceded by Capital against Bethany (W.Va.) in the consolation game. The consolation game kicks off at 4 p.m., with the championship game to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Capital jumped to a 1-0 lead when Drew Yost's 20-yard shot deflected off an Ohio Wesleyan defender and rolled just inside the right post with 28:12 left in the first half.

The Bishops evened the game in the waning moments of the first half when senior back Matt Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) sent a crossing pass to junior midfielder Ryan Martin (Dublin/Wellington), whose sliding shot found the back of the net.

Both teams had chances to break the tie in the second half but were thwarted by outstanding goalkeeper play.

Ohio Wesleyan senior Joe Anstine (Westerville/South) made a diving save of a shot by Capital's Daniel Albeit with 4:52 left in regulation time, preserving the tie.

Capital's Matt Stiles returned the favor early in the first overtime, stopping a rocket from sophomore forward Jeff Fisher (Westerville/North) that looked like it would end the game.

Less than a minute later, Anstine batted away another shot by Albeit after a Capital counterattack.

The game-winning goal came late in the second overtime. Junior back Garrett Silvert-Noftle (Yellow Springs) played the ball up the right side to Martin. Martin centered the ball to Barone, who nudged it past Seifert for the game-winner.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Capital, 18-6. Anstine finished with 3 saves, while Stiles had 7 saves for the Crusaders.

In Friday's opener, North Park took an early lead and held on to top Bethany.

Edin Dautovic put the Vikings on the scoreboard when his 30-yard free kick deflected off a Bison defender and into the goal with 32:13 left in the first half.

Bethany outshot North Park, 11-8. Matt Evans stopped 7 shots for North Park, while Adam Seifert was credited with 3 saves for the Bison.
