Capital
4, Bethany 0
Ohio Wesleyan 0, North Park 0
Aug. 30, 2003
Senior
back Jeff Krigbaum (Canal Winchester) converted the deciding penalty kick
as Ohio Wesleyan won the Fred Myers Invitational in a shootout after a
scoreless tie with North Park on Saturday night at Roy Rike Field.
Capital
defeated Bethany in the consolation game.
Scoring
chances were few and far between during the first half of the championship
game. Ohio Wesleyan's best chance came in the final 10 minutes, when sophomore
forward Nick Noel (Zionsville, Ind.) sent a crossing pass across the goal
mouth but a header by sophomore midfielder Alan Yost (Pataskala/Watkins
Memorial) sailed just outside the right post.
The
Bishops put more pressure on the Viking goal during the second half, but
North Park keeper Matt Evans made some key saves, stopping shots by sophomore
midfielder Bo Reisinger (Lewis Center/Columbus DeSales) and junior midfielder
Ryan Martin (Dublin/Wellington).
Ohio
Wesleyan had another chance with 10 minutes left in regulation time when
senior midfielder Paul Smith sent a crossing pass to Martin, but his header
was just outside the left post.
North Park threatened shortly thereafter, with Darryl Payne chipping the
ball toward the net, but Bishop keeper Joe Anstine (Westerville/South)
was there to record the save.
Ohio Wesleyan peppered the Viking goal with shots early in the first overtime.
Evans stopped Smith's roller through traffic in the box, then sophomore
forward Jeff Fisher (Westerville/North) sent a rocket over the crossbar
after a Bishop corner kick and Reisinger had a shot go wide.
The
Vikings took the lead in the shootout when Edin Dautovic connected on
the first try, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with successful kicks by Martin
and Smith to take a 2-1 lead. Evans saved Fisher's kick to keep the lead
a 2-1, but Anstine returned the favor with a stop of a drive by North
Park's Henrik Wihlborg. The Vikings tied the shootout at 2-2 on Matt Moncada's
drive, but Krigbaum then converted to give the tournament title to Ohio
Wesleyan.
It was the third time in the 26-year history of the Fred Myers Invitational
that the tournament championship was decided on penalty kicks. Frostburg
State defeated Ohio Wesleyan in 1983 and Ohio Wesleyan defeated Muhlenberg
in 1996.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot North Park, 24-1. Anstine had 1 save in the Ohio
Wesleyan goal, while Evans finished with 9 saves for the Vikings.
In Saturday's opener, Capital took a 1-0 lead on Josh Racette's goal with
15:50 left in the first half and added second-half goals by Eric Tarr,
Michael Baughn and Joe Ibokette.
Capital
outshot Bethany, 20-11. Trae Manny had 4 saves and Matt Stiles had 1 save
for the Crusaders, while Adam Seifert finished with 9 save for Bethany.
Martin received the Dick Gauthier Award as the Myers Invitational's Most
Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Anstine,
senior forward Aaron Barone (Westerville/South) and Krigbaum.
