Ohio
Wesleyan 6, Allegheny 5
May
1, 2004
Sophomore
second baseman Linsey Longstreth (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) scored twice
and the Bishops held off a valiant Allegheny comeback to defeat the Gators
in Game 6 of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday
in Meadville, Pa.
Ohio Wesleyan and Allegheny were scheduled to play again at 2 p.m., with
the winner of that game receiving the NCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA
Division III tournament.
The Bishops jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Longstreth reached
on an error by Gator shortstop Shawn Gledhill and, one out later, scored
on a double by sophomore third baseman Amy Mazur (Elyria), with Mazur
taking third on the throw. One out later, sophomore
first baseman Sarah Downs (Canton, Conn./Avon) reached
on an error by Allegheny second baseman Melissa Brockett, with Mazur scoring
on the play.
Glenhill brought the Gators within 2-1 with a leadoff homer in the bottom
of the first and Allegheny tied the game at 2-2 in the second on Katie
McCue's RBI single.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead for good with 4 runs in the third. Longstreth
led off with a walk and sophomore outfielder Britt Born (Caledonia/Marion
Harding) reached on an error by Brockett. Longstreth stole third, then
scored on a single by sophomore shortstop Tiffany Stinemetz (Marysville/North
Union), with Born taking third and Stinemetz moving to second on the throw.
Downs then singled to right, with both runners scoring on the play. After
junior catcher Janelle Dangler (Elmore/Woodmore) was hit by a pitch, junior
designated hitter Janelle Thompson (Delaware/Hayes) followed with another
single and Downs scored when Gator leftfielder Sarah Johnston was charged
with an error on the play.
Allegheny rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Brockett and McCue opened
the inning with singles.
Freshman righthander Claire Martin (Jefferson) bounced back to retire
Danielle Robine on a foul out and got Gledhill to hit into a fielder's
choice, but April Tantalo delivered a 2-run double to score Brockett and
Gledhill and bring the Gators within 6-4. Johnston then singled home Tantalo
and took second on the throw home, putting the tying run in scoring position.
Monti was intentionally walked, then Young hit into a fielder's choice
with all runners advancing safely to load the bases before Martin retired
Christine Harvey on a ground out.
Martin
worked the complete game, allowing 10 hits while striking out 2 and walking
1. The win was her 12th of the season.
Giannina Coccaro was charged with the loss for Allegheny. She allowed
6 hits while striking out 7 and walking 2.
