Ohio
Wesleyan 55, Kenyon 51
Jan.
2, 2004
Freshman
post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) scored to break a 49-49 tie in overtime,
then stole the ball to set up another basket and Ohio Wesleyan went on
to defeat Kenyon in a showdown for first place in the North Coast Athletic
Conference on Friday in Gambier.
Ohio Wesleyan and Kenyon had entered the game as the only teams with a
2-0 record in conference play. The win moved the Bishops to 3-0 in the
league, keeping them a half-game ahead of Wittenberg, which defeated Allegheny
on Friday to go to 2-0 in the NCAC.
With the Bishops trailing, 49-47, in overtime, junior post Erica Brizendine
(Grove City) hit a jumper to tie the game at 49-49 with 2:45 left in the
extra session. After a Kenyon turnover, Ray scored to put the Bishops
ahead to stay with 2:10 to play, then stole the ball from Kenyon's Krissy
Zatroch, which set up a Brizendine basket with 1:57 remaining.
Kenyon closed to within 53-50 on a free throw by Allison Lebar with 1:39
left and made it 53-51 on Katy Zeanah's free throw with :28 remaining,
but junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) hit a pair of free throws
with :26 left to restore the 4-point margin.
Zeanah had sent the game into overtime with a putback basket with :02
left in regulation. Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 44-43 lead on Heil's jumper
with 2:41 to play in regulation time, and neither team scored until Heil
hit a free throw with :14 left. But Heil missed the second free throw,
opening the door for the Ladies, and Kenyon converted when Zeanah corralled
the rebound
of Dana Halicki's missed shot and scored in the waning seconds of regulation.
Ohio Wesleyan had threatened to put the game away early, breaking a 9-9
tie with an 8-0 run that featured a basket and a 3-point play by senior
guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta).
Kenyon answered with a 13-5 run to tie the game at 22-22 late in the first
half, with Liz Narducci scoring 7 points during that span.
The Bishops bounced back with baskets by Ray and Heil to take a 26-22
halftime lead, then stretched the lead to 7 points with the help of a
3-pointer by junior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) and baskets by
sophomore guard Jenny Johnson (Delaware/Hayes) and Brizendine.
The Ladies answered with a 15-4 run, taking their biggest lead of the
game when Megan Sheasby's 3-pointer made the score 41-37 in favor of Kenyon
with 6:10 to play.
Sensabaugh drilled a 3-pointer with 4:56 left, just under 5 minutes left,
helping to bring the Bishops back and set up the frenzied final minutes
of regulation time.
Heil led the balanced Bishop offense with 12 points and grabbed a team-high
10 rebounds. Sensabaugh and Ray finished with 11 points apiece and Brizendine
added 10 points.
Sensabaugh led the Bishops with 6 assists.
Zaneah scored 17 points to lead Kenyon, while Narducci ended up with 11
points. Zaneah and Lebar led the Ladies with 7 rebounds each and Sheasby
had a team-high 5 assists.
