Ohio
Wesleyan 67, Wooster 62
Jan.
3, 2004
Freshman
post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) scored 8 consecutive points during
a second-half run that helped Ohio Wesleyan overcome a 15-point deficit
and senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) made a couple of key
plays in the closing seconds as the Bishops rallied to defeat Wooster
in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey
Arena.
The win moved the Bishops to 4-0 in the league, keeping them a half-game
ahead of Wittenberg, which defeated Hiram on Saturday to go to 3-0 in
the NCAC.
With the Bishops holding on to a 63-59 lead with less than 2 minutes left
in regulation time, Wooster closed to within 63-61 on Lindsay Schaaff's
lay-up with 1:33 left and had a chance to tie the game when Carly Loehrke
was fouled with 1:12 remaining. Loehrke hit the front end of the one-and-one
but missed the second shot, leaving Ohio Wesleyan ahead by a score of
63-62.
After the teams traded scoreless possessions, Ray was fouled and sank
both ends of a one-and-one with :25 remaining. On Wooster's ensuing possession,
Sensabaugh tied up Schaaff in the Fighting Scot backcourt and Ohio Wesleyan
was awarded possession. Sensabaugh then hit a pair of free throws with
:14.6 remaining to account for the 67-62 final.
Wooster seemed poised to run away with the game during the first half.
After Ohio
Wesleyan took a 9-8 lead on a basket by junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove
City), the Bishops encountered a drought of nearly 11 minutes, scoring
only one basket during that stretch. Meanwhile, Wooster got 6 straight
points from Sara Perry to highlight a 15-2 run that gave the Scots a 23-11
lead with 4:59 left in the first half.
Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) finally ended the Ohio Wesleyan
dry spell with a 3-point play with 3:44 remaining, but Wooster went into
the locker room with a 32-20 lead and increased its lead to 39-24 on Schaaff's
3-pointer with 16:55 left in regulation time.
Wooster still led, 42-28, after Schaaff's 3-pointer with 15:33 remaining
before Ohio Wesleyan came back.
Ray hit 4 baskets in a row, 3 coming on fast breaks, as the Bishops closed
to within 42-36 in less than 90 seconds. The Scots got free throws from
Mary Bell, Schaaff and Michelle Hall to make it 48-41, but Ohio Wesleyan
came back with a Heil 3-pointer and a Brizendine lay-in to close to within
48-46 with 9:02 to play.
Jen Flavin scored on a nifty scoop shot from along the right baseline,
ending Wooster's stretch of nearly 7 minutes without a basket, but the
Bishops stormed back again, getting a Ray bucket, a pair of free throws
by Heil and a Brizendine lay-in to tie the game at 52-52 with 6:50 left.
Heil then drilled a 3-pointer to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then
Brizendine and Heil took turns keeping the Bishops ahead going into the
final 3 minutes of regulation time.
Brizendine, who went 6-for-8 from the field during the second half, and
Heil led the Bishops with 21 points apiece. Ray, who was 6-for-6 from
the field during the second half, finished with 14 points. Brizendine
led Ohio Wesleyan with 12 rebounds and Heil grabbed 11 boards. Sensabaugh
led all players with 8 assists.
For Wooster, Loehrke led the way with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Schaaff
added 10 points and Perry led the Scots with 3 assists.
