Leigh Sulkowski hit 6 straight free throws to highlight a late
10-0 run that lifted Washington & Jefferson to a non-conference win
over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday in Washington, Pa.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 68-67 lead on a lay-in by freshman post Tifini
Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) with 2:55 left in regulation time.
Sheana Malyzka then hit a pair of free throws with 1:58 left to put the
Presidents ahead to stay. After turnovers on Ohio Wesleyan's next 2 possessions,
Sulkowski sank 2 free throws with 1:05 remaining, and after another Bishop
turnover, Sulkowski hit 2 more free throws with :43 on the clock, giving
W&J a 73-68 lead.
Malyzka added 2 free throws with :29 remaining and Sulkowski hit 2 free
throws with :18 on the clock to give the Presidents a 77-68 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 77-70 on a lay-in by junior guard Celina
Dopoulos (Strongsville) with :13 left, but Amanda Stanonik closed out
the scoring with 2 free throws with :12 to play.
Washington & Jefferson had jumped to an early 16-9 lead, but Ohio
Wesleyan rallied to take a 31-30 lead with 4:21 left in the first half.
The Bishops kept up the momentum, increasing their lead to 38-32 on the
strength of 7 consecutive points by junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove
City).
The Presidents rallied in the closing minutes, getting 3-pointers from
Jordana Gracenin and Sulkowski to close to within 40-38 at halftime.
Ohio Wesleyan had the upper hand in shooting during the first half, connecting
on 63 percent (17-for-27) of its shots from the field. Brizendine led
the way for the Bishops, hitting all 8 of her field goal tries during
the first 20 minutes.
The Bishops still led, 50-45, early in the second half before Washington
& Jefferson came back with an 8-0 run to take a 53-50 edge with 11:34
left in regulation time. The Presidents built their lead to 61-53 over
the next 2 minutes, with Shawndra McDonald contributing a 3-point play
and a 3-point basket during that stretch.
Ohio Wesleyan rallied with 2 free throws by junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview),
a free throw by Ray, a putback basket by Brizendine and baskets by Heil
and Ray to take a 64-63 lead with 5:32 remaining, and the teams traded
points twice going into the final 3 minutes of regulation time.
Brizendine, who finished up going 10-for-13 from the field, led the Bishops
with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Heil added 14 points and Ray contributed
12 points. Senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) led all players
with 9 assists.
For Washington & Jefferson, Sulkowski led the way with 28 points and
5 rebounds. McDonald added 22 points and a team-high 7 assists and Stanonik
added 14 points.
