Ohio Wesleyan 60, Denison 57

Freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) hit a pair of free throws to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and junior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) followed with baskets to give the Bishops a 6-point lead in overtime as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Denison in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday in Granville.

With the score tied, 54-54, Ray hit a pair of free throws with 3:03 left in the extra session to give the Bishops the lead.

On Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, Heil scored on an offensive rebound to extend the Bishop lead, and Dopoulos added a lay-in with 1:37 remaining to give Ohio Wesleyan a 60-54 lead with 1:37 to play.

Denison closed to within 60-57 on a 3-pointer by Emily Larouere with :58 remaining, and after Ann Staubach stole the ball from Dopulos with :29 left, the Big Red had a chance to tie the game, but Emma Woodward turned the ball over in the closing seconds to seal the outcome.

Heil had sent the game into overtime with a basket at the buzzer.

Jessica McConnell gave Denison a 52-47 lead with a 3-point play with :51 remaining, but Ohio Wesleyan rallied with a 3-pointer by Heil with :38 left, and after McConnell missed with :10 to play, Dopoulos snared the rebound to give the Bishops a chance at the tying basket.

Heil took the shot and missed, but grabbed her own offensive rebound and scored on a putback at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Denison led through most of the first half and the Big Red held a 25-17 advantage at halftime. The Big Red added to that in the second half, scoring the first 6 points of the second half to move the lead to 31-17.

Ohio Wesleyan chipped away, getting 7 straight points on a Dopoulos 3-pointer and a basket and a pair of free throws from junior post Shelby Larson (Arlington Hts., Ill./Rolling Meadows) to come within 38-34 with 9:12 left in regulation.

The Bishops closed to within 44-43 on a lay-in by junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) with 4:45 left and took a 45-44 lead when Dopoulos followed with a lay-in a minute later.

Denison reclaimed the lead with a pair of Staubach free throws, then Staubach added another free throw and a lay-in to give the Big Red a 49-46 lead going into the final 2 minutes of regulation time.

Heil led the Bishops with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Dopoulos added 13 points and Brizendine contributed 10 points. Senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) led the Bishops with 6 assists.

Staubach led the Big Red with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Larouere had a team-high 6 assists for Denison
