Allegheny
61, Ohio Wesleyan 57
Jan.
17, 2004
Valery Medwid scored 9 points in the final 2 minutes of regulation
time and Allegheny went 10-for-10 from the line in the final 1:14 to upset
Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon
at Branch Rickey Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 51-48 lead on a lay-in by junior post Erica
Brizendine (Grove City) with 2:06 remaining before Medwid hit a 3-pointer
from the left corner to tie it at 51-51 with 1:48 remaining. After a Bishop
turnover, Medwid was fouled with 1:14 left and hit both ends of the one-and-one
to give Allegheny its first lead of the game at 53-51.
Brizendine hit a jumper from the lane to tie the game at 53-53 with :51
remaining, and the Bishops got the ball back when the rebound of Medwid's
missed shot went out of bounds. With the Bishops working the offense looking
for the go-ahead basket, freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson)
lost the ball and Allegheny's Kristen Lyzen took off toward the Gator
basket. Brizendine fouled Lyzen on the breakaway and an intentional foul
was assessed on the play, giving the Gators 2 free throws and possession.
Lyzen hit both free throws on the intentional foul to give the Gators
a 55-53 lead with :24 remaining, and Medwid was fouled on the ensuing
inbounds play and sank both of those free throws for a 57-53 Allegheny
lead.
After a Bishop turnover with :19 left, Lyzen was fouled and sank 2 more
free throws to give the Gators a 59-53 lead.
Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) was fouled on a drive to the
basket and hit a pair of free throws with :10 left to bring the Bishops
within 59-55, but Medwid added 2 more free throws at the :09 mark to increase
the Allegheny lead to 61-55. Heil scored on a drive with :01 left to finish
off the day's scoring.
Ohio Wesleyan had opened up a double-digit lead late in the first half.
With the Bishops leading, 14-12, Ohio Wesleyan went on a 17-6 run that
included 6 points by Brizendine and a pair of baskets by senior post Kristin
Thompson (Logan). Heil finished off the run with a 3-pointer that gave
the Bishops a 31-18 lead with 2:41 left in the period.
Allegheny closed to within 31-24 at halftime as Medwid sank a pair of
3-pointers from the left side during the final minutes of the first half.
Thompson scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 38-32 lead with 15:47 left in
regulation time, but the Bishops then went into a dry spell, scoring only
1 basket during the next 11-plus minutes. Ohio Wesleyan still led, 49-43,
when Brizendine scored with 4:08 remaining to end the Bishop drought,
but Allegheny chipped away with 3 free throws by Meredith McDonough and
a basket by Jessica Kankoski to close to within 49-48 and set up the final
2 minutes of regulation time.
Brizendine led the Bishops with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists.
Heil added 16 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists and Ray finished
with 10 points.
Heil's 16 points increased her career total to 1380, moving her into a
tie for seventh place on the all-time Ohio Wesleyan list with Megan Coughlin,
who scored 1380 points during the 1996-2000 seasons. Next on the horizon
in sixth place is Ann Osborne, who amassed 1398 points during the 1984-88
seasons.
Medwid led the Gators with 21 points. Lyzen followed with 14 points and
shared the team lead with 5 rebounds, while Lyzen also shared the team
lead with 5 rebounds. Caitlin Murtagh had a team-high 3 assists for Allegheny.
