Ohio Wesleyan 67, Earlham 44

Sophomore guard Amanda Nanney (
Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) scored 5 points during a 10-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and the Bishops broke open the game in the second half to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Earlham on Wednesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

The first 12-plus minutes of the game featured 6 lead changes and 5 ties. Earlham wiped out an 18-12 deficit on a pair of baskets by Summer Cress and a jumper by Melanie Behler, tying the game at 18-18 with 7:40 left in the first half.

Junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) then put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay with a fast break lay-in, then Nanney drilled a 3-pointer and a 15-foot jumper in rapid succession. Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) added a lay-in and Brizendine followed with a free throw to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 28-18 with 2:31 left in the half.

Lauren Herman finally ended the Quaker drought with a jumper with 2:20 remaining, but that was it for Earlham in the first half. The Bishops got the final bucket of the period, with senior post Kristin Thompson (Logan) hitting a baseline jumper with :02 showing, to take a 30-20 lead into the locker room.

Heil took over for the Bishops early in the second half, hitting 2 free throws, converting a 3-point play and then scoring on a fast break to highlight an 11-2 Ohio Wesleyan burst to open the half.

After Cassie Byrd scored on a fast break for the Quakers, the Bishops iced the game with a 15-2 run that saw Ohio Wesleyan hold Earlham scoreless from the field for over 7 minutes.

Heil led the Bishops with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) added 10 points and shared the team lead with 2 assists, along with
senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) and sophomore guard Jenny Johnson (Delaware/Hayes).

Heil's 24 points increased her career total to 1404, moving her into sixth place on the all-time Ohio Wesleyan list, passing Ann Osborne, who amassed 1398 points during the 1984-88 seasons. Fifth place on the all-time Bishop list is held by Arden Kragalott, who scored 1460 points during the 1977-81 seasons.

Cress led the Quakers with 11 points and Michelle Behler followed with 10 points. Lindsey Chappell led Earlham with 6 rebounds and shared the team lead with 2 assists
. Byrd also dished out 2 assists for Earlham.
