Ohio Wesleyan 67, Hiram 40

Jan. 28, 2004

[ Kelly Heil ]Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 10 straight points to finish off a 16-2 Ohio Wesleyan run that opened the second half and sealed a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram on Wednesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 37-27 lead at halftime, and the Bishops opened the second half with a pair of free throws by junior post Shelby Larson (Arlington Hts., Ill./Rolling Meadows) and a basket by sophomore guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy).

Hiram got a jumper from Sarah Douglass to pull within 41-29, but the Bishops got the points back on Larson's lay-in with 16:21 left in the game.

After that, Heil scored on a steal and lay-in, then on another fast break. After a Hiram time out, Heil hit another lay-in, then scored on another fast break off a Terrier turnover before logging another steal and lay-in. Heil's 10 straight points came in a span of just over 2 minutes and extended the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 53-29 with 13:01 to play.

Hiram had jumped to an early lead, riding the inside play of Jessica Harris. Harris opened the game with a pair of jumpers from the lane, then added a drive and a putback basket as Hiram built a 10-5 lead.

Cassie Bedard hit a follow shot with 13:21 left to increase the Terrier lead to 12-5, but the Bishops soon pulled even at 12-12 on a Larson basket, a 3-pointer by junior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) and a jumper by senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta).

The Terriers took an 18-16 lead on Hannah Wight's follow shot with 7:19 left in the first half, but that would be Hiram's last lead of the night.

Ohio Wesleyan followed with a 15-0 run that featured 3-point plays by Heil and
freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson). Heil and Ray each scored 5 points and junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) added 4 during the Bishop burst, which ended with Ohio Wesleyan holding a 31-18 lead with 3:44 left in the period.

Hiram rallied late in the first half, with Allison Davis hitting a 3-pointer and Bedard converting a 3-point play to bring the Terriers within 33-27 with 1:07 left, but the Bishops seized the momentum back as Heil hit 2 free throws and Brizendine canned a rebound bucket in the final minute of the first half.

Heil led the Bishops with 21 points and 3 assists. Larson added a career-high 11 points for Ohio Wesleyan. Sophomore guard Jenny Johnson (Delaware/Hayes) led the Bishops with 8 rebounds.

Harris nearly accomplished a triple-double for Hiram, leading the Terriers with 10 points, 16 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. Wight and Davis each had 2 assists for Hiram.
