Valery Medwid hit 4 free throws in the final minute and Kristen
Lyzen sank a pair of free throws with :03 to play as Allegheny held off
an Ohio Wesleyan rally to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on
Saturday at Meadville, Pa.
Ohio Wesleyan had reduced a 15-point second-half deficit to 4 points,
trailing by a score of 54-50 when junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview)
hit a free throw with 2:10 to play.
The Gators answered with a basket by Caitlin Murtagh on their next possession,
increasing the lead to 56-50, then got 2 free throws from Medwid with
:30 remaining.
Heil drilled a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 58-53 with :25
to play, and the Bishops quickly fouled Medwid, but she sank 2 more free
throws to give Allegheny a 60-53 lead with :21 remaining.
Junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) hit a lay-in to make it 60-55
with :14 left, and after Murtagh missed the front end of a one-and-one
with :09 on the clock, junior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) hit
a 3-pointer with to make it a 60-58 game with :06 remaining.
Lyzen was fouled on the inbounds play and hit both free throws to account
for the 62-58 final.
The Bishops did not trail during the first half, taking an 8-2 lead on
2 baskets and 2 free throws by Heil and a pair of Brizendine free throws.
Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 8 points, holding a 20-12 lead with 2:14
left in the half, and took a 21-16 lead into the locker room.
Brizendine scored early in the second half to increase the Bishop lead
to 25-18, but Allegheny used a 7-0 run to tie the game at 25-25, getting
a 3-pointer by Medwid and jumpers from Lyzen and Jessica Kankoski.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with baskets by senior post Kristin Thompson (Logan)
and Brizendine to take a 29-25 lead with 14:33 left in regulation time,
but the Gators then went on a 19-1 tear that made the score 44-30 with
10:53 to play. Raelynn Miles scored 8 points during that Gator run.
Allegheny
increased its lead to 47-32 on Medwid's 3-pointer with 9:55 to play.
Brizendine led the Bishops with 26 points, going 10-for-13 from the field.
Heil added 22 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. Senior guard
Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) led the Bishops with 4 assists.
Heil's 22 points increased her career total to 1471, moving her into fifth
place on the Ohio Wesleyan list ahead of Arden Kragalott, who compiled
1460 points during the 1977-81 seasons.
Medwid
led the Gators with 15 points. Kankoski and Lyzen shared the team lead
with 7 assists and Kankoski dished out a team-high 4 assists.
