Ohio Wesleyan 69, Wooster 61

Feb. 7, 2004

Junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) turned in a key 3-point play and added a pair of free throws down the stretch and junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) was 4-for-4 from the line during the final 2 minutes as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday night at Wooster.

Ohio Wesleyan never trailed in the game but saw Wooster wipe out an early 12-5 deficit and tie the game at 14-14.

The Bishops responded with a 10-2 run that featured 4 points by Brizendine and 3-pointers by junior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) and sophomore guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy).

Wooster closed to within 3 points at 26-23, but Ohio Wesleyan ended the half with an 8-2 run capped by Heil's steal and jumper just before the buzzer to take a 34-25 halftime lead.

Junior post Shelby Larson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) hit a jumper that padded the Bishop lead to 44-32 with 13:53 left in regulation time, but the Fighting Scots came back once more. Mary Bell scored twice to highlight a 10-0 run that brought Wooster within 44-42 with 10:37 left to play.

Nanney hit a 3-pointer to end the Wooster run, and after freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) hit a free throw and Brizendine followed with a bucket, the Ohio Wesleyan lead stood at 50-42.

Wooster rallied to within 59-53 on Sara Perry's free throw with 2:05 remaining, but on the other end of the court, Brizendine followed her own missed shot and converted a 3-point play to give the Bishops a 62-53 lead with 1:38 to go.

Heil and Brizendine each hit 2 free throws and Dopoulos added one to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 67-55 with :39 left, giving the Bishops more than enough cushion to withstand 3-pointers by Marissa Holbert and Lindsey Schaaff.

Heil led the Bishops with 20 points. Brizendine added 13 points and led Ohio Wesleyan with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Nanney contributed 10 points.

Holbert led the Fighting Scots with 11 points. Michelle Hall had game-high 11 rebounds and Schaaff led Wooster with 5 assists.
