Ohio
Wesleyan 57, Kenyon 41
Feb.
18, 2004
Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 4 points
and junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) and sophomore guard Amanda
Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) added 3 each as the Bishops opened
the second half with a 12-4 run and went on to defeat Kenyon in North
Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Ohio
Wesleyan held the Ladies to only one basket over the first 9-plus minutes
of the second half, with Nanney starting off the Bishop run with a 3-pointer
before Heil followed with a jumper from the lane. Brizendine converted
a 3-point play on a fast break to increase the Bishop lead to 33-22 with
16:13 left in the game.
Kenyon got a free throw and a lay-in from Katy Zeanah as the Ladies closed
to within 33-25, but freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) sank
2 free throws and Heil followed with a drive to give the Bishops a 37-28
lead with 11:33 to play.
Zeanah converted a 3-point play to end the Kenyon drought, but the Bishops
came back with lay-in and a 3-point play by Brizendine to take a 42-28
lead with 9:04 to play.
After Kenyon rallied to within 47-37 on Dana Halicki's 3-pointer with
3:49 left, the Bishops iced the contest with fast break baskets by Brizendine
and Nanney.
Kenyon had taken an early 12-3 lead, getting 3-pointers by Krissy Zatroch,
Halicki and Megan Sheasby and a conventional 3-point play by Halicki in
the first 6-plus minutes of the game.
The Ladies cooled off from long range, though, and Ohio Wesleyan chipped
away at the deficit, eventually tying the game at 18-18 on a 3-pointer
by sophomore guard Jamie Rea (Delaware/Hayes), then taking the lead for
good at 22-21 on Brizendine's jumper from the lane. Heil put an exclamation
point on the first half for Ohio Wesleyan, closing out the scoring with
a 3-pointer in the final minute.
Brizendine led the Bishops with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Heil
finished with 13 points and led the Bishops with 4 assists.
Zaneah
led the Ladies with 12 points and 2 assists. Halicki finished with 10
points. Allison Lebar grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
