Wittenberg 66, Ohio Wesleyan 60

Feb. 21, 2004

Carrie Jones and Haley Warden hit 3-pointers to finish off an 11-2 run and Wittenberg held off a late rally to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Springfield.

Ohio Wesleyan will be seeded fourth in the upcoming NCAC tournament and will host fifth-seeded Kenyon at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops had closed to within 33-31 on a free throws by junior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) when Tiger post Geri Woessner opened the run with a lay-in. Amber Bishop converted a 3-point play to increase the Wittenberg lead to 38-31 with 14:58 to play.

Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) sank a pair of free throws to bring the Bishops within 35-33, but Jones hit a 3-pointer on Wittenberg's next possession and Warden hit a trey with 9:57 left to give the Tigers a 44-33 lead.

The Wittenberg lead remained in double figures for most of the next 8 minutes of action, with the Tigers still leading by a score of 62-50 with 1:55 remaining.

Heil then drilled a 3-pointer with 1:46 left to cut the gap to 62-53, then was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer and sank all 3 free free throws to make the score 62-56 with :59 to play.

Kari Kitchen was fouled almost immediately and hit both free throws for Wittenberg, but Heil got those points back with a pair of free throws with :51 to play.

After a Brizendine steal, Heil hit a lay-in to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 64-60 with :47 remaining.

Wittenberg's Emilie Schmid was fouled with :27 on the clock, and she hit the first free throw, then missed the second. After a Bishop miss, Kitchen was fouled with :05 left and she hit the first free throw to account for the 66-60 final.

The Tigers jumped to an early 7-0 lead as Woessner and Bishop scored baskets and Warden hit 2 free throws and Bishop one free throw, but Ohio Wesleyan tied it on a Heil basket and a basket and a 3-pointer by freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson).

The game would be tied 7 more times during the first half, the last on Brizendine's 2 free throws that made the score 25-25 with :58 left in the period.

Wittenberg took a 27-25 lead on a basket by Rachel Clark-Haggy with :21 left. Heil hit a free throw with :04 left in the half but missed the second, and the Tigers converted on the chance, with Joyce Dinto hitting a layup at the buzzer to give Wittenberg a 29-26 halftime lead.

Heil led the Bishops with 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Ray finished with 14 points and Brizendine had 13 points and led the Bishops with 12 rebounds. Senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) led Ohio Wesleyan with 6 assists.

Heil's 27 points increased her career total to 1613, moving her into fourth place on the Ohio Wesleyan list ahead of Jill Myers, who scored 1612 points during the 1984-88 seasons.

Sensabaugh's 6 assists increased her career total to 250, moving her into a tie for fifth place on the Bishop list with Jessica Viertlboeck.

Warden led the Tigers with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Woessner finished with 14 points and Bishop had 12 points.
