Ohio
Wesleyan 71, Kenyon 55
Feb.
24, 2004
Junior
wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 15 points and junior post
Erica Brizendine (Grove City) added 6 points during a 35-6 first-half
run and Ohio Wesleyan held off a late Kenyon rally to take a win over
the Ladies in North Coast Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal
action on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan advances to the tournament semifinals, where the Bishops
will face top-seeded Wittenberg at 7:45 p.m. on Friday in Springfield.
The first semifinal contest will match second-seeded Allegheny against
third-seeded Denison. The semifinal winners will play for the NCAC tournament
title at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Springfield.
Kenyon had taken an 8-6 lead less than 3 minutes into the game thanks
in part to a pair of 3-pointers by Dana Halicki, offsetting 3 Brizendine
baskets.
Heil tied the game with a pair of free throws, then freshman post Tifini
Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) put the Bishops ahead to stay with a lay-in with
14:56 left in the first half. Heil followed with a 3-pointer and a pair
of free throws, and senior
guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) hit 2 more free throws to give Ohio
Wesleyan a 17-8 lead with 13:01 left in the first half.
Allison Lebar hit a jumper from the lane to end the Bishop run at 11 straight
points, but Ohio Wesleyan came back with a 3-pointer by junior guard Celina
Dopoulos (Strongsville) and lay-ins by Brizendine and Heil to stretch
the lead to 24-10.
Lebar scored again for Kenyon with 10:03 left in the half, but Ohio Wesleyan
reeled off 10 straight points on a Brizendine lay-in, a Sensabaugh drive
and 3-pointers by sophomore guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of
Mercy) and Heil, the latter giving the Bishops a 34-12 lead with 6:02
left in the half. Heil added a 3-point play and Brizendine hit a pair
of free throws to give the Bishops their biggest lead of the half, 41-14,
with 2:40 remaining, and Ohio Wesleyan took a 43-21 lead into the locker
room.
The Bishops led, 52-27, with 12:59 left in regulation time but scored
only one basket during the next 9-plus minutes. Kenyon assembled a 20-5
run, getting 3-pointers from Liz Narducci, Megan Sheasby and Halicki and
a pair of lay-ins by Lebar. Halicki's 3-pointer brought Kenyon within
57-47 with 3:39 to play.
Sensabaugh answered for Ohio Wesleyan, hitting a pair of free throws,
and Brizendine scored on a fast break on the Bishops' next possession.
Ray followed with 2 free throws and Nanney hit one free throw to cap a
7-0 run that iced the game.
Heil led the Bishops with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Brizendine finished
with 16 points. Sensabaugh led the Bishops with 5 assists.
Sensabaugh's
5 assists increased her career total to 255, moving her into fifth place
on the Bishop list ahead of Jessica Viertlboeck, who had 250 assists during
the 1997-2001 seasons.
Halicki
led the Ladies with 14 points, while Lebar added 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Katie Zeanah grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds and Sheasby had a team-high
4 assists.
