Ohio Wesleyan 65, Guilford 60

Nov. 21, 2003

Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview)
scored 6 points as Ohio Wesleyan closed the first half with an 11-2 run and junior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) hit a key 3-pointer and a free throw down the stretch as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Guilford in first-round play of the Marymount Tip-Off Classic on Friday in Arlington, Va.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the semifinals, where the Bishops will play host Marymount on Saturday afternoon. The winner of that game will advance to Sunday's championship game.

Leading, 25-23, with 2:20 left in what had been a nip-and-tuck first half, Ohio Wesleyan widened the margin as Heil hit the first of 2 free throws with 2:06 to play. Heil missed the second free throw, but junior
post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) got the rebound and passed to freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) for a basket that made it 28-23.

Heil drilled a 3-pointer on the Bishops' next possession, and after Guilford's Jada Ray scored to make it 31-25, freshman guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) followed with another 3-pointer. Heil sank a pair of free throws with :04 left to give Ohio Wesleyan a 36-25 halftime lead.

Guilford whittled away at the Bishop lead during the second half, closing to within 39-38 on A.J. Robertson's 3-pointer with 15:46 left in regulation time. The Quakers still trailed by just a point at 59-58 after Jennifer King hit a pair of free throws with 2:24 remaining.

Dopoulos sank a 3-pointer with 1:22 to play to give the Bishops a 62-58 lead, and after King scored to make it 62-60 with :46 left, Brizendine hit a pair of free throws and Dopoulos hit the first of 2 free throws to account for the 65-60 final.

Heil led the Bishops with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Dopoulos finished with 15 points and Brizendine added 14 points. Senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) led the Bishops with 5 assists.

Courtney Hill led Guilford with 15 points and shared the team lead with 8 rebounds. King added 11 points, Jennie Keichline also shared the team lead with 8 rebounds and Nicole McCrory and Dionne Graham had 3 assists apiece
