Ohio
Wesleyan 77, Case Reserve 73
Nov.
29, 2003
Junior
wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 6 of her game-high 28 points
during the final :15 as Ohio Wesleyan finished the game with a 12-0 run
to defeat Case Reserve in non-conference action on Saturday in Cleveland.
Trailing, 73-65, with just under 2 minutes to play in regulation time,
the Bishops got a pair of free throws from junior post Erica Brizendine
(Grove City) with 1:55 left to slice the deficit to 6 points. After a
Spartan turnover, freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) sank 2
more free throws to make it 73-69 with 1:21 remaining.
Brizendine then cleared the rebound of a Spartan miss, and scored on a
putback of Ray's missed shot to bring the Bishops within 73-71 with :42
left.
Heil then stole the ball from CWRU's Angie Zeuch and streaked downcourt
for a lay-in to tie the game with :12 left. Zeuch was called for an intentional
foul on the play, with Heil awarded 2 free throws and the Bishops retaining
possession of the ball. Heil hit the first free throw, giving Ohio Wesleyan
a 74-73 lead, but missed the second. On the ensuing possession, Heil converted
a 3-point play to account for the 77-73 final.
Case Reserve had jumped to an early 8-2 lead just over 2 minutes into
the game, but fueled by 3 Brizendine baskets, the Bishops came back with
a 9-2 burst of their own to lead by an 11-10 score.
The Spartans defused that rally and broke a 15-15 tie with a 13-3 burst
to take a 28-18 lead midway through the first half, with Andrea Haylett
scoring 3 baskets during CWRU's spurt. Ohio Wesleyan closed to within
6 points late in the first half, but the Bishops did not come closer than
5 points until the final 2 minutes.
Heil led all players with 28 points and shared the team lead with 8 rebounds,
while Brizendine finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds and Ray added
14 points. Junior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) and senior
guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) shared the team lead with 4 assists
apiece.
Haylett and Jasmine Rowan scored 16 points apiece to lead CWRU, while
Shawna Dinger and Dana Dempsey each had 10 points. Haylett and Dinger
led the Spartans with 7 rebounds each and Zeuch had a team-high 4 assists.
