Ohio Wesleyan 65, Mount Union 51

Dec. 1, 2003

[ Kelly Heil ]Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 7 consecutive points to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and the Battling Bishops went on to defeat Mount Union in their home opener on Monday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

Freshman post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) gave the Bishops a quick 2-0 lead with a lay-in on Ohio Wesleyan's first possession, but Mount Union came back with 8 straight points, the last on Kyla Hogan's jumper from the top of the key, to take an 8-2 lead less than 3 minutes into the game.

The Purple Raiders still led by a 10-4 count when Ray scored from the paint, then Heil followed with a jumper from the lane, a drive along the right baseline and a 3-point play off a fast break to give the Bishops a 13-10 lead with 10:36 left in the first half. Mount Union ended the run with a Lisa Dubinsky layup, the Purple Raiders' first basket in a span of 7 minutes, but the Bishops bounced back with Heil's pullup jumper off the fast break, sandwiched between a pair of hoops by sophomore guard Jenny Johnson (Delaware/Hayes) for a 19-12 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 11 points during the first half and took a 30-23 lead into the locker room.

Mount Union's Ashley Bourdeau scored twice to highlight an 8-2 run that helped the Purple Raiders close to within 5 points at 38-33 with 13:20 left in regulation time, but the Bishops answered with a 10-1 spurt that featured a 3-pointer by Heil, a hook shot from the lane by senior post Kristin Thompson (Logan) and 3 points by junior post Shelby Larson (Arlington Hts., Ill./Rolling Meadows), pumping the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 48-34 with 9:14 left.

The Purple Raiders put together one more run, scoring 8 straight points to slice the deficit to 48-42 with 6:26 to play, but Ray scored 3 points to snap the streak and the Bishop defense did not allow Mount Union to score twice in a row through the remainder of the contest.

Heil led the Bishops with 30 points and 12 rebounds, while Ray finished with 13 points.
Senior guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) led the Bishops with 3 assists.

Bourdeau led Mount Union with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Hogan dished out a team-high 5 assists for the Purple Raiders
