Ohio
Northern 58, Ohio Wesleyan 54
Dec.
30, 2003
Jenny Beane sank a 3-pointer with :55 to play to put Ohio Northern
ahead to stay and Carrie Miller added a pair of free throws in the final
seconds to seal the outcome as Ohio Northern defeated Ohio Wesleyan in
non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Branch Rickey Arena.
Trailing, 50-36, with less than 9 minutes to play, Ohio Wesleyan held
the Polar Bears scoreless from the field for a span of 8:10 while rallying
to take the lead.
Junior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) started the Bishop comeback
with a lay-in, then senior
guard Krystal Sensabaugh (Wapakoneta) drilled a 3-pointer and junior post
Erica Brizendine (Grove City) followed with a jumper from just inside
the 3-point line to bring the Bishops within 50-43.
Heil followed with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws as Ohio Wesleyan
cut the deficit to 50-48 with 5:28 left in regulation time.
Beane answered with a pair of free throws with 4:45 remaining, ending
a 4-minute-plus scoring drought for Ohio Northern, but the Bishops got
the points back on their next possession on a layup by senior post Kristin
Thompson (Logan).
With less than 3 minutes to play, Heil blocked a pair of Ohio Northern
3-point shots, then fed Brizendine for a lay-in on the other end of the
court to tie the game at 52-52. Heil then stole the ball on Ohio Northern's
next possession, setting up Brizendine's fast-break lay-in that put Ohio
Wesleyan ahead, 54-52, with 1:47 to play. It was the Bishops' first lead
since they took a 2-0 lead on Heil's steal and lay-in 30 seconds into
the game.
Miller hit the second of 2 free throws with 1:36 left, bringing the Polar
Bears within 54-53, and after Thompson turned the ball over on the Bishops'
next possession, Beane hit a 3-pointer from the right side to give Ohio
Northern a 56-54 lead with :55 remaining.
Sensabaugh had a chance to tie on the Bishops' next possession, driving
down an open lane, but her shot rolled off the rim and Alyssa Rickert
grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Rickert missed the front end of the
ensuing one-and-one, giving the Bishops another chance at tying or winning
the game.
Ohio Wesleyan turned to Heil, who turned the corner at the free throw
line and started to drive down the lane, but her pass underneath was high
and went out of bounds with :04 on the clock, and after a quick foul on
the inbounds pass, Miller hit the 2 free throws to ice the game.
Ohio Northern threatened to pull away early, using an 8-0 run that featured
a pair of baskets from Jen Hrovat to take a 16-7 lead.
The Bishops closed to within 23-19 behind the scoring of junior guard
Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville), who scored on a steal and lay-in, a pair
of free throws and a jumper from on top of the 3-point line.
The Polar Bears closed the half with a 9-2 run, holding the Bishops without
a basket for the final 4:47 of the period, and then built their lead to
14 points as Hrovat scored twice during an 8-0 spurt that hiked the Ohio
Northern lead to 50-36.
Heil
led the Bishops with 21 points and 6 steals, while Brizendine finished
with 13 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Sensabaugh led the Bishops
with 5 assists.
Beane and Hrovat led Ohio Northern with 11 points apiece. Jackie O'Flaherty
had a team-high 8 rebounds for the Polar Bears.
