Ohio Wesleyan 6, Aurora 5

March 6, 2005

Sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) slammed a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to lift the Bishops over 10th-ranked Aurora on Sunday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Sherman's one-out rocket to left field came off Aurora reliever Jonathan Turek and gave the Bishops the lead for the first time in the game. Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (
Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) then retired the Spartans in order in the bottom of the frame to wrap up his first collegiate win.

Aurora had taken a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Chris Forbes' 2-run single, and the Spartans increased their lead to 4-0 in the fifth as John Hopkins and Aaron Thor drove in runs.

The Bishops got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) tripled and scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Tom Bottichio (
Mason).

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 4-3 in the seventh when
freshman outfielder Wes Desmond (Frisco, Texas/MacArthur) and junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) each tripled and scored on an Aurora wild pitch.

Aurora added an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bishops sent the game into extra innings by scoring twice in the top of the ninth. Desmond led off with a walk and Sherman ripped a double to left center before Williams and Toney plated the runners with back-to-back sacrifice flies.

Kampmann worked out of a jam in the bottom of the 10th, setting the stage for Sherman's circuit clout.

Bottichio had 3 hits for the Bishops, while Sherman, Desmond and junior third baseman Sammy Hall (
North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) collected 2 hits apiece.

Junior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) worked the first 5.0 innings, allowing 4 runs. Freshman righthander Xander Jones (
Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) followed with 2.0 innings of 1-hit relief and Kampmann allowed just 1 hit over the final 4.0 innings.

George Creviston worked the first 6.2 innings for Aurora, striking out 9 and allowing 7 hits. Turek pitched the final 4.1 innings and was charged with the loss
